On a February evening, Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC) of the\nUniversity of Macau (UM) kicked off its 15th<\/sup> anniversary\ncelebrations. The first major event was \u2018Alumni Night\u2019, a gala dinner that\nbrought together 250 students, faculty, and alumni. As photos and videos\nflashed across screens in the venue, SHEAC members were transported back to 2010,\nthe year in which the college was established. Under the leadership of Founding\nMaster Prof Iu Vai Pan, the college has grown steadily through a variety of\neducational initiatives and the efforts of students and faculty, laying a solid\nfoundation for liberal arts education. Today, its core mission remains clear:\nto consistently enhance the college\u2019s offerings and provide an even more\nenriching environment in which students may grow and thrive.<\/p>\n\n

Laying a Foundation for\nLiberal Arts Education<\/p>\n\n

The gala dinner was more than just a celebration\u2014it was a\n\u2018homecoming\u2019 event for SHEAC alumni, allowing them to reminisce about their\ncherished UM memories. For current students, it was an opportunity to connect\nwith alumni. Throughout the evening, everyone shared stories about the college while enjoying delicious food, and expressed\ntheir gratitude to Founding Master Prof Iu Vai Pan for his immense\ncontributions to the college over the past 14 years.<\/p>\n\n

Under Prof Iu\u2019s leadership, SHEAC has remained committed to promoting\nwhole-person development by offering diverse educational initiatives that allow\nstudents to explore their passions. Sports enthusiasts can hone their athletic\nskills and represent the college in competitions by joining college\ncheerleading, football, or basketball teams. This year, SHEAC won the CICA\n(Committee on Inter-College Affairs) Master\u2019s Cup Overall Championship\norganised by the university again,  a\ntestament to the hard work and dedication of the students. Meanwhile, those\nwith a love of reading and intellectual exchange can join the reading groups\nfor in-depth discussions, or take part in the \u2018Justice Workshop Series\u2019 to\ndebate ideas with peers.<\/p>\n\n

Guiding Students to Achieve the Unity of\nKnowledge and Action<\/p>\n\n

In August of last year, Prof Luo Qian assumed her role as SHEAC\u2019s new\ncollege master. Building on Prof Iu\u2019s legacy, the management team has continued\nto improve various aspects of the college, while further developing the college\ninto the students\u2019 \u2018second home\u2019. The team aims to transform the college into a\nplatform where students can put their knowledge into practice and achieve the\nunity of knowledge and action.<\/p>\n\n

To cultivate students\u2019 attachment to the college, the management team started with the fundamentals\u2014enhancing the\nliving environment. This academic year\nmarked the debut of the \u2018Clean Room Challenge\u2019, which attracted over 150\nstudents and greatly improved the hygiene and environmental conditions of the\ncollege. To strengthen the sense of community among SHEAC members, the college organised\nthe \u2018Birthday Meal Gathering\u2019 and distributed birthday meal vouchers to\nstudents. More than 250 students and\nfaculty attended the gathering and enjoyed meals together in a warm and\ncollegial atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n

By highlighting the concept of \u2018home\u2019, SHEAC aims to make itself both a\nwelcoming haven and a springboard for growth\u2014a place where students can focus\non academic growth and competency development in a supportive and vibrant\ncommunity, while gaining the confidence to pursue their ambitions. Recognising\nthat the transition from university life to the \u2018real world\u2019 is not easy, the\ncollege has launched three initiatives to guide students to define their\naspirations and accomplish their goals.<\/p>\n\n

Progressing Together Through Different\nInitiatives<\/p>\n\n

This academic year, SHEAC has placed greater emphasis on fostering\nacademic excellence among students through the launch of the SHEAC Tutorial\nProgramme. This initiative encourages high-achieving students to study with\npeers and mentor those who need support. As the \u2018Record on the Subject of\nEducation\u2019 chapter of the Book of Rites<\/i>\nstates: \u2018Through learning, one discovers their limitations; through teaching,\none understands the true challenges of learning.\u2019 We believe that \u2018to teach is\nto learn twice\u2019\u2014through mentoring others, students not only identify gaps in\ntheir knowledge but also deepen their mastery of learning, thus turning\ninformation into lasting wisdom that will serve them beyond graduation.<\/p>\n\n

Apart from\nacquiring knowledge, integrating knowledge with practice is of paramount\nimportance. SHEAC prioritises experiential learning. Take environmental\neducation for example: in March and April this year, the college organised a\nseries of Earth Day activities, including food waste and cardboard recycling (which\ngave students insight into the lives of local families at the grassroots\nlevel), beach cleanups, and upgrading the college\u2019s recycling station. Through\nthese activities, students not only understood how reducing waste and carbon\nemissions align with the country\u2019s environmental policies and global\nsustainable development goals, but also experienced first-hand how effective\neco-friendly initiatives\u2014and the community organisations driving them\u2014can\namplify individual impact into collective change.<\/p>\n\n

In addition, the college has strengthened its career planning support.\nThis includes hosting several lunch meetups and tea sessions to provide further\nstudies consultation, and taking students on study tours to the Guangdong-Hong\nKong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Beijing to visit leading universities,\nenterprises, and innovation centres. These visits and exchange activities have\nprovided students with direct exposure to the latest developments in mainland\nChina and its market, enabling them to define their roles in national\ndevelopment and confidently prepare for the future.<\/p>\n\n

Empowering Students to Sail Towards Their\nDreams<\/p>\n\n

SHEAC\u2019s 15th<\/sup> anniversary marks the beginning of a new\nchapter of its development. The college will remain committed to creating a\nwarm home for students and providing more comprehensive career guidance so that they\ncan chart their career paths. Through various educational initiatives, the\ncollege will continue to sharpen students\u2019 academic skills and core\ncompetencies, while transforming itself into a platform for practical learning.\nWe hope to empower students to translate knowledge into tangible skills through\ndiverse experiences, preparing them for a promising future.<\/p>\n\n

Luo Qian is\nthe college master of Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC) and a full professor\nin the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Faculty of Health Sciences at\nthe University of Macau (UM). Before joining SHEAC, she held the position of\nhead of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at UM. A graduate of Peking\nUniversity (BSc and MSc) and the University of British Columbia (PhD), Prof Luo\nhas taught at several top universities worldwide, including Nanyang\nTechnological University in Singapore and the Hong Kong University of Science\nand Technology.<\/p>\n\n

Chan U Wai is\na resident fellow of Stanley Ho East Asia College and holds a PhD in Sociology\nfrom the University of Macau. Born and raised in Macao, Dr Chan has over 15\nyears\u2019 experience in teaching and community service. He has previously worked\nfor the Macao SAR Government and international poverty alleviation\norganisations.<\/p>
