This transformation presents both significant challenges and exciting\nopportunities for science, technology, and engineering education. In response,\nthe University of Macau (UM) is reinventing engineering education. By fostering\ninterdisciplinary curriculum innovation and integrating artificial intelligence\ninto courses, UM is aligning its engineering programmes with the evolving\ndemands of industry. The university is committed to developing high-quality\nengineering professionals equipped to meet the challenges of the new era.\nThrough these efforts, UM aims to contribute to the industrial transformation\nof the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, particularly Macao and the\nGuangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and to inject new\nmomentum into regional development.<\/p>\n\n<p>Diverse\nEngineering Education System<\/p>\n\n<p>UM\u2019s engineering education is structured across several departments,\nincluding the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of\nElectrical and Computer Engineering, and Department of Electromechanical\nEngineering. These departments offer a full range of degree programmes, from\nundergraduate to doctoral levels. The undergraduate programmes are designed to\nprovide students with a strong foundation in engineering, while the\npostgraduate programmes focus on deepening professional knowledge and practical\nskills. Master of Science (MSc) programmes are available in the fields of civil\nengineering, construction project management, electrical and computer\nengineering, robotics and autonomous systems, and electromechanical\nengineering.<\/p>\n\n<p>Integrating\nAI into Curricula<\/p>\n\n<p>In response to rapid advancements in emerging technologies, UM is\nenhancing its engineering education system, with interdisciplinary collaboration\nas a key strategy. The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), which leads\nUM\u2019s engineering education, enriches programme curricula by placing greater\nemphasis on digitisation, informatisation, and intelligentisation. AI\nintegration and practical AI applications are also systematically incorporated\ninto courses at all levels. These efforts ensure that the educational offerings\nmeet the diverse learning needs and proficiency levels of students. Moreover,\nall engineering departments are exploring ways to integrate AI and data science\ninto curricula.<\/p>\n\n<p>In civil engineering, for example, FST has launched an MSc programme in\nconstruction project management in response to the increasing use of digital\ntwin-based smart construction technologies. This programme equips students with\nthe skills to apply AI algorithms for project schedule prediction and resource\nallocation optimisation, enabling them to manage engineering projects\neffectively throughout their lifecycle. Similarly, the MSc programme in electromechanical\nengineering focuses on smart manufacturing and robotics, leveraging AI to\nimprove equipment fault diagnosis and predictive maintenance.<\/p>\n\n<p>To stay at the forefront of technological advancements, FST is also\nplanning to establish new departments in microelectronics, artificial\nintelligence, and robotics. The faculty is committed to deepening the\nintegration of engineering education and cutting-edge technologies.<\/p>\n\n<p>Building Professional Knowledge and Practical\nSkills Through Progressive Training <\/p>\n\n<p>UM\u2019s engineering education is closely aligned with industry needs. The\nuniversity emphasises the development of strong scientific literacy, an\ninnovative spirit, and hands-on practical skills\u2014essential qualities for every\nengineering student.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018To nurture students into exceptional engineering professionals, we must\ndevelop their ability to integrate scientific knowledge and engineering\nexpertise, while fostering their innovative and critical thinking,\u2019 emphasises\nFST Dean Prof Xu Cheng-Zhong as he discusses the essentials of engineering\neducation. He highlights the importance of developing students\u2019 practical\nskills, a focus that is deeply embedded in UM\u2019s engineering education system.\nAll courses and learning activities are designed to provide students with ample\nopportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. Through\nvarious laboratory courses and hands-on projects, such as engaging\nundergraduates in AI-based mini-engineering projects, students significantly\nenhance their problem-solving skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Xu also shares the design of postgraduate engineering programmes:\n\u2018From student recruitment and enrolment to coursework, lab work, internship,\nand career planning, we offer comprehensive support at every step.\u2019 To help new\nstudents adapt to university life and build a sense of belonging, FST organises\norientation activities at the start of each semester. Additionally, financial\nsupport is widely available\u201452.4 per cent of master\u2019s students receive\nscholarships, teaching assistantships, or research assistantships\u2014ensuring that\nstudents can focus on their academic studies. A strong emphasis is placed on\nhands-on learning, with laboratory components integrated into the core courses\nof every postgraduate engineering programme. A standout feature is the Showcase\nLaboratory, which provides students with a platform to apply theoretical\nknowledge to real-world situations. To deepen students\u2019 understanding of\nindustry practices, the faculty regularly hosts industry seminar series. These\nevents allow students to learn from professionals who share real-world case\nstudies and discuss emerging trends. The two-year master\u2019s programmes also\noffer flexibility in graduation requirements, enabling students to choose\nbetween a project report or an internship instead of a thesis. This innovative\napproach is designed to enhance students\u2019 practical skills while fostering\ntheir ability to think creatively and solve real-world problems.<\/p>\n\n<p>International\nExchange and Collaboration<\/p>\n\n<p>UM attaches importance to promoting international academic exchange and\nresearch collaboration. Under the coordination of FST, UM has established\nseveral joint training programmes in engineering with overseas universities.\nThese include a \u20182+2\u2019 dual PhD degree programme with the University of Lisbon\nand \u20181+3\u2019 master\u2019s-PhD programmes in collaboration with institutions such as\nImperial College London. In addition, UM provides students with opportunities\nto attend short-term courses abroad, participate in international academic\nforums, and engage with renowned scholars from around the world. These\ninitiatives not only foster international academic exchange, but also broaden\nstudents\u2019 international horizons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Xu notes that in recent years, a growing number of graduates from\nworld-renowned universities have joined FST. Currently, over 80 per cent of\nFST\u2019s academic staff hold degrees from prestigious international institutions.\nThese faculty members bring exceptional teaching expertise and extensive research\nexperience, driving significant progress in both teaching and research. Over\nthe past 12 years, the number of academic papers published by FST has tripled,\nwith 85.7 per cent of them appearing in SCI Q1 and Q2 journals, reflecting the\nfaculty\u2019s strong research capabilities. In the Times Higher Education (THE)\nWorld University Rankings by Subject 2025, UM\u2019s engineering programmes were\nranked 126<sup>th<\/sup> globally. Additionally, the university\u2019s engineering\ndiscipline is ranked among the top one per cent in the Essential Science\nIndicators (ESI) database.<\/p>\n\n<p>Empowering Students for Success in Advanced\nStudies and the Job Market<\/p>\n\n<p>UM\u2019s engineering graduates excel in both advanced academic pursuits and\nprofessional careers. Many who choose to pursue further education gain\nadmission to prestigious universities, such as Imperial College London, the\nUniversity of Edinburgh, the University of Hong Kong, the University of\nMelbourne, the University of Southern California, and the National University\nof Singapore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>On the employment front, FST has established strong partnerships with\nover 60 enterprises, including Gree Electric, Nam Kwong Group, and GAC Group,\nas well as various government departments. These partnerships provide students\nwith valuable internship opportunities while enabling employers to recruit\nhighly qualified professionals. In March this year, FST organised the first UM\nFST GBA T&amp;E Career and Internship Fair in the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.\nNearly 30 companies from the Greater Bay Area participated, offering about\n1,000 job opportunities in technology and engineering. The fair significantly\nboosted students\u2019 competitiveness in the job market. According to Prof Xu,\nnearly half of FST\u2019s doctoral graduates secure academic positions at higher\neducation institutions after graduation, while master\u2019s graduates earn an\naverage monthly starting salary of RMB 23,000. These achievements underscore\nthe high quality of FST\u2019s education and the strong competitiveness of its\ngraduates in the market.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is worth noting that under the certification and registration system\nfor architecture and urban planning professionals established by the Macao SAR\nGovernment, individuals with a degree in civil engineering, environmental\nengineering, electrical engineering, or electromechanical engineering can\nbecome registered engineers after completing internships and passing the\nrequired examinations. Notably, UM graduates\nconstitute about 80 per cent of Macao\u2019s\nelectromechanical engineers, 50 per cent of\nits electrical engineers, and 25 per cent of its civil engineers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Driving\nIndustry Development in Macao and Hengqin <\/p>\n\n<p>Amid rapid technological advancements, UM remains steadfast in its\ncommitment to an industry-oriented approach in engineering education. The\nuniversity continuously refines its education system, fosters deeper\nintegration of engineering and artificial intelligence, strengthens faculty\ndevelopment, and enhances industry-academia collaboration. These initiatives\naim to provide students with exceptional educational resources and practical\nopportunities, while cultivating high-quality professionals to support Macao\u2019s\neconomic
