More than 80 per cent of its faculty\nmembers are from overseas. It has partnerships with over 220 academic\ninstitutions in 32 countries. Its students come from different corners of the\nworld, drawn by the English-speaking environment. In the <i>2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings<\/i>, it secured\nan impressive 5<sup>th<\/sup> spot in international outlook, in addition to\nbeing ranked among the top 400 overall.&nbsp;<\/p><p><b>Academic Programmes\nMeeting Global Trends<\/b><\/p><p>A rising\ninternational reputation may attract initial interest, but what truly sustains\nenrolment is the quality academic programmes the university offers. According\nto UM\u2019s Vice Rector (Global Affairs) Rui Martins, not only does the university\ncontinuously improve the contents of the programmes to increase their\ncompetitiveness and keep pace with the fast-changing society; it also actively\nseeks to increase its degree of internationalisation and enhance the quality of\nits teaching and research through regional collaboration and international\npartnership. Some programmes offered by the university have gained\ninternational recognition and accreditation. For instance, several\nundergraduate programmes offered by the Faculty of Science and Technology have\nbeen recognised by members of the Washington Accord (including the United\nStates, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Russia). The Faculty of Business\nAdministration has performed equally well in this respect, with several\nundergraduate programmes having gained accreditation from international\nprofessional bodies, and more accreditations to be expected in the future.&nbsp; \n<\/p><p>Prof Martins\nattributes the appeal of UM\u2019s academic programmes to their meeting global\ntrends. He says, \u2018Every year, we receive applications from students in\ndifferent parts of the world, especially Portuguese-speaking countries and\nASEAN countries. They mostly choose programmes in engineering and law. They are\neager to learn and want to use the knowledge they acquire here to serve their\nhome countries.\u2019 Prof Martins says that UM will offer various scholarship and\nsponsorship programmes to attract outstanding students from Portuguese-speaking\ncountries and countries along the Belt and Road route, in line with the\npolicies of the central and Macao SAR governments, in order to encourage more\nstudents to contribute to the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of\nMacao into a world centre for tourism and leisure as well as a service platform\nfor business collaboration between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.<\/p><p><b>Building a Knowledge-based\nBusiness Platform<\/b><\/p><p>Manuel\nRoDirigues De Veiga, a law major from the Republic of Cabo Verde, obtained his\nbachelor\u2019s degree from UM this June and chose to stay at UM for further\nstudies. He says, \u2018UM is like my second home. It has excellent faculty members\nand teaching facilities. Studying here is like savouring a cocktail, because\nyou meet people from many different nationalities.\u2019 Several years ago, Veiga\nwas admitted to UM on a scholarship for his outstanding academic performance,\nthus beginning a new chapter in his life. He explains that the legal systems in\nMacao and Cabo Verde are both based on the Portuguese law, with close\nsimilarities in language and logic. He plans to pursue a career in e-business\nafter graduation. Specifically, he wants to build an e-platform in Macao to\nfacilitate business activities between China and Cabo Verde, so knowledge of\nbusiness laws in both places will be a great advantage.<\/p><p><b>Colourful Life at UM<\/b><\/p><p>Ngooi Khang\nJer, a second-year student from Malaysia, set his heart on UM\u2019s programme in\ninternational integrated resort management while he was still in secondary\nschool. He was interested in programmes in business and service management, so\nhe attended lectures on overseas studies and consulted his teachers\u2019 opinions\nto obtain more information. In the process, UM emerged as an attractive option.\nAfter comparing UM to some candidate universities in Taiwan and Hong Kong, he\ndecided to choose UM. He says, \u2018UM is a rising university. Many of its\nprogrammes are very competitive globally, with some ranked among the best in\nthe world, including the programme I am studying.\u2019 He praises UM for its\ncommitment to quality education, its various laboratories that allow students\nto put their knowledge into practice, and its excellent faculty members who\nenjoy interacting with the students and are good at explaining complicated\nconcepts in simple language. An active participant in the activities organised\nby his faculty, residential college, and the Students\u2019 Union, he looks forward\nto studying in a foreign country for six months next year to experience a\ndifferent culture.<\/p><p><b>The Student-centred\nApproach<\/b><\/p><p>Ng Jia Ying,\na third-year student of biomedical sciences from Malaysia, likes the\nstudent-centred approach at UM as opposed to the traditional method that is\nrigid and inflexible. She credits the innovative teaching methods at UM with\nturning her into a self-driven learner. She once took a general education\ncourse in the history of the Holocaust by Prof Glenn Timmermans from the\nFaculty of Arts and Humanities. She says, \u2018The course explores the relationship\nbetween the evolution of mankind and human nature. Prof Timmermans raised many\npenetrating questions and encouraged us to find answers to them. He also\nrequired us to look for information online after class. I think this teaching\nmethod suits this course perfectly, and we learned a great deal from it.\u2019<\/p><p><b>Like the United Nations<\/b><\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p>MD Shakhawat\nHossain Shuvoraj from Bangladesh studies in the Department of Computer and\nInformation Sciences. He never regrets leaving his home country to study at UM.\n\u2018I was looking for a young university with a high degree of\ninternationalisation, and UM fit the bill perfectly,\u2019 he says. Shuvoraj and\nseveral like-minded students established a society for international students\nunder the Students\u2019 Union to help foreign students integrate into their lives\nin Macao. He has joined various student events and academic conference in Australia,\nEgypt, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia and so on. Shuvoraj enjoys his life\nat UM and often takes part in extracurricular activities. For instance, he and\nseveral friends formed a team to attend the meeting of the Model United Nations\nat UM. In 2018, Shuvoraj was nominated as the first campus leader of Macao by\nHult Prize Foundation and United Nations to organize world&#8217;s largest social-innovation-based\ncompetition \u2018Hult Prize\u2019.
