{"id":39537,"date":"2019-02-21T15:44:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T15:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/2019\/02\/47377-pt_pt\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T15:44:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T15:44:00","slug":"47377","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/47377\/","title":{"rendered":"Estudo da UM revela que peixes e frutos secos ricos em n-3 PUFA podem ajudar na preven\u00e7\u00e3o de f\u00edgado gordo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A study\nconducted by researchers from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS),\nUniversity of Macau (UM), shows that an increased consumption of fish and nuts\nrich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA), leading to the nutritional\nbalance of n-6\/n-3 PUFA, can help to prevent fatty liver induced by alcohol\nconsumption. The research findings have been published in <i>Biochimica et Biophysica Acta &#8211; Molecular Basis of Disease<\/i>, <i>Critical Reviews in Food Science and\nNutrition<\/i>, and <i>Biochemical Pharmacology<\/i>.<\/p><p>Accumulating\nevidence suggests that excessive alcohol use over time can lead to fatty liver.\nFatty liver is characterised by lipid accumulation in the liver, which has been\nwidely recognised as a condition that may progress to the advanced stages of liver\ndiseases, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatic carcinoma. According to Wan\nJianbo, an associate professor from the ICMS and the leader of the project,\nthere has been an enormous increase in the consumption of n-6 PUFA due to the\nincreased intake of vegetable oils, while the consumption of n-3 PUFA, which is\nrich in fish, seeds, and nuts, has been declining. This has resulted in a large\nincrease in the n-6\/n-3 ratio from 1-2:1 in the past to 20-30:1 today. The\nchange in the composition of these essential PUFAs will significantly increase\nthe prevalence of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer,\nand inflammatory diseases.<\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p>In a project\ntitled \u2018the role of n-6\/n-3 PUFA ratio in alcoholic fatty liver\u2019, using <i>fat-1<\/i> transgenic mice (which can\nendogenously synthesise n-3 from n-6 PUFAs) and the supplementation of\nmarine-derived or plant-derived n-3 PUFAs, a series of animal studies were\nconducted to determine the role of the decreasing tissue n-6\/n-3 PUFA ratio in\nalcoholic hepatic steatosis, and the impact of n-6\/n-3 PUFA ratio on lipid\nmetabolism and inflammation at the liver-adipose tissue axis. \u2018Increasing the\ndietary intake of n-3 PUFAs can reduce the n-6\/n-3 PUFA ratio, which is of\ngreat significance to human health,\u2019 says Prof Wan. In addition, previous\nstudies from Prof Wan\u2019s group also show that decreasing the n-6\/n-3 PUFA ratio\ncan help to tackle the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, a main risk factor
