<\/p>
The University\nof Macau (UM) held the Congregation 2019 today (25 May). Macao SAR Chief\nExecutive and UM Chancellor Chui Sai On praised the university for nurturing\ninnovative graduates with global vision and producing fruitful research results\nto support the economic diversification and sustainable development of Macao through\nan outstanding faculty team.<\/p>
Chui\nofficiated at the ceremony in the company of members of the university\u2019s top\nmanagement team, including University Council Chair Lam Kam Seng, UM Rector\nYonghua Song, and Vice Rectors Rui Martins, Billy So and Kou Mei. Nearly 4,000\npeople attended the ceremony, including members of the University Assembly,\nUniversity Council and Senate; government officials; prominent community\nmembers; parents of the graduates; and UM faculty and staff.<\/p>
In his\nspeech, Chui said: \u2018Against the backdrop of the rapid development in Macao over\nthe past year, the university has also been forging its way forward. It has\nundertaken the initiatives to establish the State Key Laboratory of Internet of\nThings for Smart City, assist in building the base for training\nChinese-Portuguese bilingual talent, and foster cooperation in the Greater Bay\nArea on the education of innovative technology. Students are encouraged to\nrelate their own personal development to the national advancement, and to love\nand contribute to Macao and the nation. The university also dedicates itself to\nsupporting the government\u2019s policies of education and talent nurturing. A corps\nof high-calibre teachers is in place to train innovative and top-notch talent\nwith global vision. By strengthening the talent pool and innovation power on a\ncontinuous basis, the university can produce more scientific and technological\noutput for a sustainable and moderately diversified local economy.\u2019<\/p>
In his\nspeech, Rector Song congratulated the graduates for successfully completing\ntheir studies at UM and stressed the importance of vision. He said, \u2018Our\nuniversity has been striving to create a positive, open, inclusive and\ndiversified environment, as well as an internationalised campus culture for\nstudents. To this end, the university provides students with more learning and\nexchange opportunities both at home and aboard; widens their horizons and\nexposure; and encourages them to learn and think with a macroscopic and open\nmind. Students of the University of Macau can now go on exchange and study at\nmore than 150 renowned higher education institutions around the world. These\nopportunities not only help students improve their language proficiency in a\nnative environment and strengthen their disciplinary knowledge, but also enable\nthem to gain experience through living in a different cultural environment.\u2019 He\nadded: \u2018You should care about the destiny of your nation, and weave your dreams\ninto the development of your country. I hope that you can seize the\nopportunities presented to you.\u2019<\/p>
In her\nspeech, Lei I Teng, representative of this year\u2019s graduates, reminisced about\nher four years at UM\u2014her memory of burning the midnight oil in the residential\ncollege and the Learning Commons with her roommate, and her gratitude to the\nuniversity for the opportunity for overseas exchange and how that experience\nhelped her become more independent, let her experience a new culture, and\nimproved her language skills. She said she would never forget the valuable\nopportunities provided by the university. She thanked the professors for their\npatience and guidance, and for showing the students that education is defined\nby passion. She also thanked her parents and her fellow students for their\nsupport over the years. She said, \u2018We are the stars because we are greater than\nwhat we thought. We can have infinite possibilities, and we can make a big\nimpact to society. We are the stars because we can never imagine how much\npositivity we can bring to others, to the people in need and to the community.\u2019<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>
This year,\nmore than 1,500 students of bachelor\u2019s degree programmes, from the Faculty of\nArts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education,\nFaculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and Technology,\nand Faculty of Social Sciences, received their graduation certificates. Among\nthese students, 42 have completed programmes offered by the Honours College.<\/p>
