At the\nCongregation 2019 held today (25 May), the University of Macau (UM) presented\nthe Teaching Excellence Award, which recognises faculty members with outstanding\nperformance in teaching. The recipient in the 2018\/2019 academic year is\nAssistant Professor Dr Wang Ruibing from the Institute of Chinese Medical\nSciences.<\/p>
Every year,\nthe recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award is selected by a selection\ncommittee from numerous nominees through a rigorous process. Selection criteria\ninclude the following: teaching philosophy, professional knowledge in the\nrelevant discipline, communication skills and teaching outcomes, contributions\nto the development of the discipline, ability to encourage self-driven learning\nby motivating students to pursue continuous intellectual growth, adoption of\ninnovative teaching methods, and leadership skills in promoting teaching\nexcellence within and outside of the university. Dr Wang has spared no effort\nto deepen the students\u2019 understanding of professional knowledge through different\nteaching methods and a combination of theory and practice. He also adopts an\ninteractive approach to increase student engagement in the classroom and to\nencourage creative thinking.<\/p>
Dr Wang is\nappreciative of the award, saying that it shows recognition of his efforts in\nteaching. He enjoys his job as a teacher, and hopes that innovative teaching methods\nwill enhance the students\u2019 interest in learning. He says he will continue to incorporate\nmore innovative elements into his teaching so as to increase student engagement\nin the classroom and help them experience the joy of thinking and overcoming\nchallenges. He hopes students will acquire not only professional knowledge, but\nalso analytical and problem-solving skills, from his lectures, so they can gain\na competitive advantage.<\/p>
Dr Wang\nobtained his PhD degree from the Department of Chemistry at the Queen\u2019s\nUniversity in Canada. His PhD thesis received a Best Paper Award from the\nuniversity and was nominated for the\nGovernor General\u2019s Gold Medals. Dr Wang joined UM in 2014 and currently teaches\ncourses in the ICMS and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine. He received\nthe 2017\/2018 ICMS Faculty-level Academic Award and a third prize in the Natural\nScience Award category of the 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards.<\/p>
