The University of Macau (UM) on 22\nMarch will confer the Doctor of Letters honoris\ncausa<\/i> degree on Prof Wang Anyi, a renowned Chinese writer, in recognition\nof her achievements and contributions to Chinese literature. Following the\nceremony, Prof Wang will give a lecture titled \u2018Chinese-Language Literature in\na Global Context\u2019. All are welcome.<\/p>\n\n
Prof Wang\u2019s\nworks have been in the spotlight in the literary arena over the years, winning\na slew of awards and honours both at home and abroad, including the Mao Dun\nLiterature Award for Song of Everlasting\nSorrow<\/i>; the National Award for Short Story of 1981 for The Destination<\/i>; and Writer of the Year 2007 and Xiao Hong Women’s\nLiterature Award of 2011 for Age of\nEnlightenment<\/i>. In 2015, she was invited to share\nher writing experience at the Macao Literary Festival. In the same year, she\nwas appointed a writer in residence in UM\u2019s Cheng Yu Tung College, where she\nheld seminars and writing workshops for students from the college.<\/p>\n\n
Prof Wang has been a\nprolific writer since she started publishing in 1977. Amounting to some six\nmillion words, her works cover a wide range of genres, including novels such as\nChang Hen Ge (Song of Everlasting Sorrow), Fu Ping, Huang He Gu Dao Ren\n(Ancient Man from Yellow River), 69 Jie Chu Zhong Sheng (the 69th<\/sup>\nJunior High Graduates), and Mi Ni; <\/i>novellas such as Lapse of Time <\/i>and Baotown<\/i>;\nshort stories such as The Destination<\/i>;\nprose pieces,\nwhich are included in collections such as Du Yu (Speaking to Myself), Nan\nRen He Nv Ren, Nv Ren He Cheng Shi (Men and Women, Women and the City), Xun\nZhao Shang Hai (In Search of Shanghai), Jian Qiao De Xing Kong (Cambridge’s\nStarry Sky), <\/i>and Jin Ye Xing\nGuang Can Lan (Starry Sky Tonight)<\/i>; and plays such as Jin Suo Ji\n(The Golden Cangue)<\/i>, and Fa\nLang Qing Hua (Love Talk in a Hair Salon).<\/i> Jin Suo Ji <\/i>was adapted from a novel written by\nEileen Chang. It was staged by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and the Perry Chiu\nExperimental Theatre in Hong Kong, in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Fa Lang\nQing Hua <\/i>was staged by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre in 2008. Some of her\nworks have been translated into English, French, German, Dutch, Russian,\nItalian, Spanish, Japanese, Hebrew, Korean, Vietnamese, Khmer, and Thai.<\/p>\n\n The honorary degree\nconferment ceremony will start at 5:00pm on Friday 22 March in Mr and Mrs Lau Chor Tak Lecture Theatre, Anthony Lau Building\n(E4-G078), UM.
