The University of Macau\u2019s\n(UM) State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines (SKL-QRCM)\nand the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) recently co-organised a\nworkshop at UM. Experts and scholars from China and the US as well as UM\nfaculty and students attended the event to discuss quality research and the establishment\nof internationally recognised quality standards for Chinese medicines.<\/p>
Macao Science and Technology\nDevelopment Fund (FDCT) Administrative Committee member Cheang Kun Wai, USP\u2019s\nvice president and general manager for the Greater China region, and SKL-QRCM Director Wang\nYitao attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Representatives\nfrom both sides gave keynote speeches on different topics related to quality\nstandards for Chinese medicines.<\/p>
The USP has always attached\ngreat importance to its collaboration with UM in quality research for Chinese\nmedicines. In September 2018, a delegation led by USP\u2019s vice president and\ngeneral manager for the Greater China region visited\nthe FDCT to discuss the feasibility of Macao supporting Chinese medicine\ncompanies in mainland China to expand their presence in the dietary supplements\nmarkets in the US and Portuguese-speaking countries. Both parties also reached\nan consensus on various issues, including strengthening the partnership between\nthe USP and UM\u2019s SKL-QRCM, promoting the establishment of internationally\nrecognised quality standards for Chinese medicines, and enhancing Macao\u2019s\ninfluence on matters related to the establishment of quality standards for\nChinese medicines and the promotion of Chinese medicines on the global market.\nThis workshop is one of the concrete measures to implement the consensus\nreached during that meeting.<\/p>
Having reputable,\nauthoritative and internationally recognised standards is the key to the\nglobalisation and modernisation of Chinese medicines. The standards for drugs,\ndietary supplements and herbal medicines documented in the US Pharmacopeia<\/i> are the national standards in the US, and are used\nin more than 140 countries. The USP standards are among the highest standards\nin the world, and they play an important role in the quality control of drugs\nand healthcare products worldwide.<\/p>
In 2012, the SKL-QRCM and\nthe USP signed an agreement on the establishment of a collaborative lab. Later,\nthe lab formed a research team to tackle the challenging issues in the\ndevelopment and establishment of international quality standards for Chinese\nmedicines. Since then, the team headed by Prof Li Shaoping has proposed new,\ntailor-made strategies that meet the requirements for the establishment of\ninternational quality standards. The team has also developed efficient and\npractical methods for quality evaluation. Six quality standards developed by\nthe team have been included in the US\nPharmacopeia<\/i>. The team also received a second prize of the 2018 Macao\nScience and Technology Award in the Science and Technology Progress category. <\/p>
