The University of Macau (UM) today\n(27 September) held the Second Macau Stem Cell Symposium. The event attracted\nmore than 100 experts and scholars from around\nthe world, including the United States, Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong,\nand Macao. During the event, participants had in-depth discussions on the\nlatest developments in stem cell research. According to Prof Wei Ge, vice\nrector (research) of UM, stem cell<\/i> research holds\ntremendous promise for medical<\/i> <\/b>treatment and is one of the key research areas at UM.\nThis symposium is\nexpected to boost the development of stem cell research in Macao. <\/p>
According to Prof Ge, as\na leading comprehensive university in the west of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao\nGreater Bay Area (GBA), UM plays a vital role in the GBA\u2019s development and\nserves as a centre for technological innovation and talent development. With\nthe participation of Chinese and overseas experts, the symposium is expected to\nprovide a boost to stem cell research in Macao. According to Prof Chuxia\nDeng, dean of UM\u2019s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), in recent years, the FHS has stepped up efforts in research innovation\nand commercialisation of research results, with a significant increase in the quantity\nand quality of research publications. <\/p>
At the symposium, well-known\nscholars from around the world shared the latest developments in stem cell\nresearch and cutting-edge technologies in the field. Ji Weizhi, a member of the Chinese\nAcademy of Sciences (CAS) and dean\nof the Institute of Primate Translational Medicine at Kunming University of\nScience and Technology, gave a talk titled \u2018Dissecting the Global Dynamics of\nMonkey and Human Embryogenesis and Germ Cell Formation\u2019. Jing Naihe, a researcher\nfrom the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology of the CAS, gave a\ntalk titled \u2018Molecular Architecture of Lineage Specification and Tissue Organisation\nin Post-implantation Mouse Embryo\u2019. Wang Yong, a professor from Pennsylvania\nState University, gave a talk titled \u2018Biomimetic Niche for Stem Cell Delivery\nUsing Aptamer Functionalized Hydrogel\u2019. FHS Associate Dean (Research) Renhe Xu,\nAssistant Dean Chen Guokai, and Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) Associate\nProfessor Wang Chunming each gave a speech on their research results.<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>
The symposium was organised by the FHS, with\nassistance from the ICMS and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in\nChinese Medicines and the Macau University of Science and Technology. The event included 11 themed talks on various topics, including\nembryonic development and tissue production, translational medicine,\nmechanistic study of stem cell development and translational application of the\ndiscoveries, and biomaterials and applications. FHS Dean Renhe Xu said that the\nsymposium provided a platform for stem cell experts from the GBA and other\nregions to exchange ideas and explore collaboration opportunities, adding that\nthe event also provided a valuable learning opportunity for students.<\/p>
