The University of Macau (UM) will continue to offer three Principals\u2019 Recommended Admission schemes in the next academic year to attract outstanding students. They are the Principals\u2019 Recommended Admission Scheme, the Chinese and Portuguese Bilingual Talent Nurturing Scheme, and the Outstanding Student-Athletes Admission Scheme. The university recently held an admission talk to help form-6 students, their parents, and secondary school teachers to learn more about the three admission schemes, the unique competitive advantages of UM\u2019s undergraduate programmes, and the career prospects of UM graduates. <\/p>
Since its launch the Principals\u2019 Recommended Admission Scheme has been very well received and the number of students admitted to UM through this scheme has increased steadily for three consecutive years. This year, a record number of about 350 outstanding students were admitted through the scheme. Among them, 37 students were ranked No 1 in their secondary school classes. The other two schemes, namely the Chinese and Portuguese Bilingual Talent Nurturing Scheme and the Outstanding Student-Athletes Admission Scheme, aim to cultivate outstanding Chinese-Portuguese bilingual professionals and to encourage outstanding student athletes to pursue their athletic careers in Macao. Applicants who have attained the proficiency of CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Portugu\u00eas L\u00edngua Estrangeira) Level A2 can apply to the Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese Studies through the Chinese and Portuguese Bilingual Talent Nurturing Scheme. Those who have represented Macao at international or regional sports competitions in the past two years can apply to UM through the Outstanding Student-Athletes Admission Scheme. Scholarships will be granted to all students admitted through the three schemes.<\/p>
According to UM Registrar Rico Lam Long Wai, with the support of the central and Macao SAR governments as well as all sectors of society, UM has made rapid progress in recent years in various areas, including teaching, research, and international rankings. Lam says UM\u2019s abundant resources and high-calibre faculty team combine to provide an excellent learning environment for students. He adds that an international model of education and a unique residential college (RC) system ensure a multifaceted education ungoverned by the clock, and the university will continue to nurture graduates with a global mindset and a sense of social responsibility for Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and China.<\/p>
During the event, representatives of various faculties, RCs, the Honours College, and the Registry answered students\u2019 questions about admission and academic programmes. Later, the students visited the teaching facilities and laboratories, including the Linguistics Laboratory, the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming (ISCG) the Gaming Laboratory, the Moot Court, the Creative Media Laboratory, and the Automotive Engineering Laboratory, to gain a better understanding of the different programmes. They also visited the RCs and had dinner there to experience the atmosphere of community and peer education at UM. <\/p>
A form-6 student says the event provided a lot of useful information, adding that she learned about the philosophy of education of the Honours College and the RCs and also had a chance to talk to professors from the department of her choice, which helped her learn more about the field.<\/p>
