Two forums on sustainable\ntourism and hospitality practices in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay\nArea opened today (21 November) at the University of Macau (UM). The forums\naimed to provide a platform for industry practitioners and academics to share\ntheir knowledge and experience in sustainable tourism and hospitality practices\nin the Greater Bay Area in order to promote education and employment in related\nfields in the area.<\/p>
Officiating guests at the\nopening ceremony were Rui Martins, acting rector of UM; Maria Helena de Senna\nFernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Sou Chio Fai,\ndirector of the Higher Education Bureau; Wong Chi Iong, chief executive of the\nDivision of Continuing Education under the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau;\nand Jean Chen, dean of FBA.<\/p>
Dean Chen said in her speech\nthat the fast development of the Greater Bay Area brings new opportunities for\nindividuals and organisations in the area, and the two forums aim to bring\ntogether leading tourism and hospitality educators, scholars, industry\npractitioners, and students to share their knowledge and experience in\ndeveloping sustainable practices in mainland China and the Greater Bay\nArea. <\/p>
The first forum is titled\n\u2018Forum on Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Practice in the Guangdong-Hong\nKong-Macao Greater Bay Area\u2019. It drew many leading educators, scholars, and\nindustry practitioners in the related fields from the Greater Bay Area and\noverseas. Participants shared their knowledge and experience in developing\nsustainable practices in mainland China and the Greater Bay Area, in the hope\nof deepening their understanding through different perspectives and promoting a\nconsensus in the industry. They also had in-depth discussions on the major\nchallenges facing the tourism and hospitality industry, including limited resources\nand intensifying competition, as well as the ever-increasing need for\ndeveloping sustainable practices to thrive amid the challenges. <\/p>
The other forum is titled\n\u2018Forum for Tourism and Hospitality Graduate Students in the Greater Bay Area\u2019.\nMany outstanding master\u2019s and PhD students from the Greater Bay Area\nparticipated in the forum. Through exchanging ideas with well-known industry\nexperts, the students learned more about the latest developments of the\nindustry.<\/p>
The forums invited 16\ndistinguished scholars from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macao, and mainland\nChina to be the keynote speakers. They are William Tang, national hotel star\nrating inspector and deputy secretary-general of Les Clefs d’Or China; Justin\nNg, assistant vice president of Sustainability Life Cycle Management at Galaxy\nMacau; Sebastian Chung, director of Safety, Health, Hygiene and Environment at\nMandarin Oriental Singapore; Rob Law, professor of the School of Hotel and\nTourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Liu Jingyan, professor\nand associate dean of the Business School at Sun Yat-Sen University; Hannah\nShen Han, professor of the Department of Tourism at Fudan University; Don\nDioko, professor and director of the International Tourism Research Centre of\nMacau at the Institute for Tourism Studies; Cevat Tosun, professor of the\nFaculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Macau University of Science\nand Technology; Justin Li Jun, professor and head of the Department of\nExhibition Economy and Management, School of Tourism Management, South China\nNormal University; David Fu Yi, assistant professor at Guangdong University of\nFinance and Economics; Joanna Li Zhou, professor and head of the Hotel\nManagement Programme at Jinan University\u2019s Shenzhen Tourism College; Eric Chan,\nassociate professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong\nPolytechnic University; Amy So, associate professor and interim director of the\nCentre for Career and Research Advancement in Integrated Resorts at UM;\nLawrence Fong Hoc Nang, assistant dean (international and external relations)\nof FBA and assistant professor of the Department of Integrated Resort and\nTourism Management at UM; Yeongbae Choe, assistant professor and associate head\nof the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management at UM; and Jacey\nChoe, assistant professor of the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism\nManagement at UM.<\/p>
The forums were organised by\nthe Centre for Career and Research Advancement in Integrated Resorts under the\nFBA, with support from Asia-Pacific CHRIE (a leading hospitality and tourism\neducation association in the Asia\u2013Pacific region), Sun Yat-Sen University\u2019s\nBusiness School, Fudan University, Xiamen University\u2019s School of Management,\nSouth China Normal University, Jinan University\u2019s Shenzhen Tourism College, and\nMacau University of Science and Technology. The two events drew more than 450\nleading educators, scholars, industry practitioners, and students in the\nrelated fields from Portugal, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao,\nhighlighting Macao\u2019s role as a \u2018bridge\u2019 that facilitates communication between\nGreater Bay Area cities and the outside world. \n<\/p>
