<\/p>
The\nUniversity of Macau (UM) today (9 November) held the Ceremony for the\nConferment of Honorary and Higher Degrees 2019. This year, more than 800\nstudents from PhD degree programmes, master\u2019s degree programmes, and\npostgraduate diploma\/certificate programmes received graduation certificates.\nAt the ceremony, Secretary\nfor Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Tam Chon Weng, acting as the\nrepresentative of Macao SAR Chief Executive and UM Chancellor Chui Sai On, said\nthat the Macao SAR government will continue to support the development of\nfirst-rate programmes at UM. He expressed hope that UM would continue to\nnurture professionals who love China and Macao, and attain more achievements in\nscientific research, in order to make more contributions to the sustainable\ndevelopment of Macao and China.<\/p>\n\n
Tam said, \u2018The SAR\ngovernment adheres to the policy of developing Macao through education and\ntalent nurturing. It has therefore been strengthening support to higher\neducation development. To this end, the Higher Education Fund was put in place\nin 2018, after the Higher Education Regime officially came into effect. The\nfund aims to ensure better investment of public resources in higher education,\nso as to create conditions conducive to elevating its standards. In recent\nyears, UM as a comprehensive public university has made tremendous efforts to\nnurture talent for the Macao SAR and the nation, and to contribute actively to\nthe community. The university has obtained fruitful achievements in teaching\nand research, and has seen a continuous rise in academic standing and\ninternational prestige. By rooting itself in Macao and integrating into the\nGreater Bay Area, the nation and beyond, UM has made steady progress towards\nits goal of being an institution of excellence.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
Tam added: \u2018The\nSAR government will continue to support UM in creating a better teaching and\nresearch ambience, enhancing the \u20184-in-1\u2019 education model, and establishing top\ndisciplines. We trust that the university will uphold the \u201cOne Country\u201d principle\nand leverage the \u201cTwo Systems\u201d advantage to make further progress. In this\nmanner, UM will continue to nurture more talents that remain intimately\nconnected to China and Macao, to generate more scientific research, and to assist\nin moderately and sustainably diversifying the economy of Macao. It will also\ncontinue to support the SAR government in participating in the development of\nthe Greater Bay Area, and make greater contributions to the sustainable\ndevelopment of Macao and the nation.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
Tam also said\nto the graduates: \u2018While pursuing and realising our dreams, we should also make\nuse of our wisdom and strength to contribute to the development of Macao and\nthe nation, as well as the great national rejuvenation.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
UM Rector\nYonghua Song said: \u2018Over the past year, UM has formulated development\nstrategies focused on expansion in size, internationalisation, faculty\ndevelopment, and R&D. In response to the trends in higher education,\nresearch and innovation in Macao, China and all over the world, UM has adopted\nthe \u2018RISE\u2019 strategy, which includes four elements: Relevance, Impact, Significance,\nand Excellence. This strategy allows for efficient talent nurturing and\nplanning of teaching and research. UM has also drawn up a new blueprint to\nencourage cross-disciplinary collaboration with a view to developing UM through\nboth inheritance and innovation, giving full play to its strengths and scaling\nnew heights in the pursuit of excellence.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
Rector Song\nadded, \u2018UM will\ncontinue to work in line with development trends of the nation and the globe\nbased on current educational and research outcomes. Combined with the\nadvantages brought about by the development of the Greater Bay Area, I believe\nUM will have an even larger space and arena for development. UM graduates will\nenjoy more opportunities and broader horizons.\u2019 He also said to the graduates,\n\u2018UM is where you started your journey to success. I am\nsure you will grasp the opportunities presented to you along the way, create\npromising futures, and become pillars of society.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
Liu Yifan,\nrepresentative of the graduates, delivered a speech to thank the professors and\nfamily members, especially parents, for their support. Liu is an outstanding\nstudent and has published six articles in Nature\nCommunications<\/i>, Oncogene<\/i>, and Cancer Letters <\/i>as first author or\nco-author. She said, \u2018Compared with undergraduate studies, postgraduate studies\nfocus more on specialised knowledge and skills in our disciplines.\u2019 She added,\n\u2018During this season of transition, from graduation to starting a new journey, I\nam still dreaming to be a scientist and to achieve an impact that will make a\nvisible difference to cancer research and the world.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
This year, a total of 819 students from the\nFaculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of\nEducation, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and\nTechnology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and\nMaterials Engineering, and Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, received\ntheir graduation certificates. Among these students, 151 are from PhD degree\nprogrammes, 611 are from master\u2019s degree programmes, and 57 are from\npostgraduate certificate\/diploma programmes. <\/p>
