The University of Macau (UM) today (9 November)\nheld the Ceremony for the Conferment of Honorary and Higher Degrees 2019.\nDuring the ceremony, the university conferred honorary doctorates on Mr Qiao\nXiaoyang, Ms Lau Sin Peng, Prof Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, and Dr Roy Chung Chi Ping,\nin recognition of their outstanding achievements and significant contributions\nto social development and education.<\/p>
During the ceremony, Secretary for Social\nAffairs and Culture Tam Chon Weng, acting as the representative of Macao SAR\nChief Executive and UM Chancellor Chui Sai On, conferred honorary doctorates on\nMr Qiao Xiaoyang, Ms Lau Sin Peng, Prof Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, and Dr Roy Chung\nChi Ping, in the company of UM University Council Chair Lam Kam Seng and UM\nRector Yonghua Song. Mr Qiao Xiaoyang received a Doctor of Law honoris causa<\/i> degree. Ms Lau Sin Peng\nreceived a Doctor of Education honoris\ncausa <\/i>degree. Prof Dennis Lo Yuk Ming received a Doctor of Science honoris causa<\/i> degree. Dr Roy Chung Chi\nPing received a Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa <\/i>degree. In his speech, Secretary Tam said: \u2018The four\nawardees excel respectively in law, education, science, and innovation and\nentrepreneurship, contributing significantly to the nation and Macao. They are\ntruly worthy of our admiration and emulation.\u2019<\/p>
Tong Io Cheng, dean of UM\u2019s Faculty of Law,\ndelivered a citation for Mr Qiao Xiaoyang. Part of the citation read: \u2018Since\nthe 1980s, the concept of \u201cOne Country, Two Systems\u201dhas been put into practice\nand advanced systematically. Mr Qiao Xiaoyang emerged as one of the legendary\nfigures during this period. As a contributor to China\u2019s legal system since the\nreform and opening-up, Mr Qiao has an encyclopaedic and intimate knowledge of\npolitics, economics, and society in China. With a broad perspective, he probed\ndeep into the realities of Hong Kong and Macao and keenly studied the political\nenvironments prevailing in these two territories. With regard to the\nconstitutional issues in Hong Kong and Macao since their return, he has always\nengaged in sincere conversations with people from all walks of life with a view\nto forging a consensus through rational discussions. As an open-minded and\ndown-to-earth person with leadership and tact, he has shown both strength and\nfinesse in handling problems. His professionalism and personal charisma have\nearned the respect of the mainstream of Hong Kong and Macao society.\u2019<\/p>
Wang Chuang, dean of UM\u2019s Faculty of Education,\ndelivered a citation for Ms Lau Sin Peng. Part of the citation read: \u2018Ms Lau\u2019s\ncareer in education has spanned nearly five decades. She has visited various\nplaces in China and other countries, joining conferences on education and\npublishing papers in national journals. Meanwhile, she has also been writing\nextensively for major newspapers, government-affiliated, and private\npublications in Macao. In the 1980s, the education system of Macao was\nundergoing a major reform. The government, the education sector, and local\neducation associations were working together for the development of education\nin the territory. On behalf of the Chinese Educators Association of Macau, Ms\nLau made many suggestions both in support of and in amendment to the proposals\non education put forward by the government. It may be said that she spared no\neffort in her contribution to education. She also attached great importance to\nstudents\u2019 education, teachers\u2019 rights, and the development of private schools.\nHer insightful inputs on many related topics were invaluable to the sector. One\nof her works, A History of Education in\nMacao<\/i>, was published in 1999 and has veritably laid the foundation for the\nstudy of the history of education in the territory.\u2019<\/p>
Chuxia Deng, dean of UM\u2019s Faculty of Health\nSciences, delivered a citation for Prof Dennis Lo Yuk Ming. Part of the\ncitation read: \u2018During his medical training at the University of Oxford, Prof\nLo paid attention to the fact that amniocentesis was a rather risky\nconventional method of prenatal diagnosis. This was because the method came\nwith a 0.5 per cent rate of miscarriage. In his search for an alternative, he\nbegan studying the feasibility of non-invasive prenatal testing. He discovered\na natural basic parameter for prenatal testing, and successfully transferred\nhis findings from DNA analysis to clinical application. In other words, he\napplied the research of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis to a clinical setting,\nthereby making a significant breakthrough in medicine. Both the discovery and\nthe non-invasive method for prenatal diagnosis were swiftly and widely adopted\nin over 90 countries, benefiting tens of millions of expecting mothers. In\n2017, Prof Lo was once again ranked as the top 20 translational researchers by Nature Biotechnology<\/i>, a prestigious\ninternational scientific journal, and was among the top five on the list.\u2019<\/p>
Jean Chen, dean of UM\u2019s Faculty of Business\nAdministration, delivered a citation for Dr Roy Chung Chi Ping. Part of the\ncitation read: \u2018Dr Chung has created a legendary reputation in the Hong Kong\nindustry with his unremitting efforts, and has been named by Hong Kong media as\nthe \u201cKing of Power Tools.\u201d As a leader in the industry, Dr Chung actively\npromotes the industrial development of Hong Kong. He often tirelessly leads the\nindustry to explore business opportunities in the mainland and around the\nworld, so that industrialists can better understand the domestic and overseas\nmarkets, as well as the development of new technologies in respective fields.\nHe is committed to giving back to the community, and notably nurturing the\nyouth, As society is now moving towards a knowledge-based economy, Dr Chung\nbelieves that vocational education is crucial to the future development of Hong\nKong. He is currently the chairman of the Hong Kong Vocational Training\nCouncil, and has been appointed by the Hong Kong SAR government to chair the\nTask Force on Promotion of Vocational and Professional Education and Training\nto nurture talents for different industries in Hong Kong.\u2019<\/p>
Ms Lau delivered a speech to express thanks to\nUM for the honorary degrees on behalf of all the awardees. She said: \u2018My\ninsights come from three sources: apart from teaching and training imparted to\nme by school teachers, there are innumerable \u201csilent teachers\u201d that were the\nbooks, papers, newspapers, and periodicals that I was able to access. Moreover,\nthere are countless \u201cvoices\u201d that acted as teachers, which came from the\ndiscussions and debates at various conferences and seminars.\u2019She added: \u2018The\nfour of us have two things in common. First, we all have been engaged in\nteaching and enjoy cultivating the next generation. Second, we spared no\nefforts in contributing to society and took it as our life-long endeavour.\u2019<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>
Mr Qiao also delivered a speech, in which he\nshared his special ties with UM. He said: \u2018From site selection, laying the\nfoundation stone, construction, to the formal inauguration of the new campus,\nit can be said that I was involved in every stage of the process. This morning\nI told the students: \u201cYou no longer need to address me as a guest when\nintroducing me, as I am not a guest anymore. I also told the students that I\nfeel pleased to be a UM member and that seeing the campus so lively and\nvibrant, I myself feel younger as well.\u2019His speech was greeted with thunderous\napplause. <\/p>
