Thanks to the great support of the central and\nMacao SAR governments, the University of Macau (UM) has progressed at an astounding\nspeed in scientific research over the past 20 years. In the Essential Sciences\nIndicators (ESI) rankings, it is ranked among the top 1 percent in six\nsubjects, namely Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology,\nComputer Science, Clinical Medicine, and Social Sciences, General. Through adopting a\nproblem-oriented approach, highlighting unique features, bringing existing\nadvantages into full play, and strengthening cooperation in scientific\nresearch, UM focuses on supporting disciplines with local characteristics that\nare in line with global trends. In addition, a new \u20183+3+3+3\u2019blueprint has also\nbeen formulated to support interdisciplinary research. <\/p>
<\/b><\/p>
Focusing on Cutting-edge Research<\/b><\/p>
Essentially, the \u20183+3+3+3\u2019 model refers\nto UM\u2019s three state key laboratories (for integrated circuits, Chinese medical\nsciences, and Internet of Things for smart cities, respectively ), three new\nkey research areas (precision medicine for cancer treatment, advanced\nmaterials, and regional oceanography), three interdisciplinary research fields\n(artificial intelligence, cognitive and brain science, and data science), and\nthree research platforms for humanities and social science (Centre for Macau\nStudies, Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management, and Institute for\nAdvanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences). UM focuses on cutting-edge\nresearch and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, especially the\nintegration of humanities and social sciences on the one hand, and modern\ntechnology on the other.<\/p>
<\/b><\/p>
A Top Platform\nfor Innovation in Chinese Medicine<\/b><\/p>
Biomedicine is an important field of\nresearch at UM, which involves ensuring the quality of Chinese medicines,\nestablishing international quality standards, developing innovative medicines\nand health products, applying precision medicine in tumour treatment, stem cell\nand tissue regeneration, bioinformatics and medical big data, ageing and ageing-associated\ndiseases, neurological and brain sciences, and biological imaging. The\nuniversity has China\u2019s first state key laboratory in the field of Chinese\nmedicine, and has established a top platform for innovation in Chinese\nmedicine. The laboratory have won several special science and technology awards\nin Macao as well as the second prize of the State Scientific and Technological\nProgress Award. The laboratory has also carried out extensive collaborations\nwith the United States Pharmacopeia and the European Pharmacopoeia in the\ndevelopment of quality standards for more than ten Chinese medicines. <\/p>
<\/p>
Ranked No 2 Globally in Published Papers on\nChip Research<\/b><\/p>
Electronic information is one of the\nbest-performing areas of research at UM. The State Key Laboratory of Analog and\nMixed-Signal Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits has distinguished itself at\nthe internationally authoritative IEEE International Solid-State Circuits\nConference (ISSCC). In 2019, eight papers from the laboratory were accepted at\nthe conference, ranking the university second in the world. The laboratory has also\nwon numerous national awards for achievements in science and technology. The\nState Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City focuses on the\nintegration of physical interconnection, network communication, and IoT\nmodules, in order to support the development of a people-oriented \u2018Internet\nPlus\u2019smart city, with a radiating effect to the Greater Bay Area. The laboratory\nmainly conducts basic and applied research in five areas: urban big data and\nsmart technologies, smart sensing and network communications, IoT applications\nfor smart energy systems, IoT-based smart transport systems, and urban public\nsafety monitoring and disaster prevention.<\/p>
<\/p>
Record-breaking\nResearch in Advanced Materials<\/b><\/p>
UM conducts innovative research in civil\nengineering, electrical and computer engineering, electromechanical\nengineering, mathematics and applied physics, and materials engineering. Main\nresearch directions include robotics and intelligent systems, regional\noceanography, design and synthesis of nanomaterials, and development of new\nsources of energy, materials, and technologies. Main research outcomes include hybrid\nactive power filters, perovskite solar cells and zinc-air fuel cells, as well\nas superabsorbent and superconducting highly-elastic hydrogel. The photoelectric\nconversion efficiency of perovskite developed by UM researchers reaches 12.9\nper cent, close to the peak photoelectric conversion efficiency of other\nexpensive semiconductors. The innovative hydrogel can absorb up to 13,600 times its own weight in water, which is more than twice the water-absorption ability of the most water-absorbent hydrogel ever recorded.<\/p>
<\/p>
Substantial Participation in Science and\nTechnology<\/b><\/p>
As a public university in the west of the Greater\nBay Area with the most state key laboratories, UM takes an active part in\ntechnological innovation in the area. In March 2019, UM\u2019s Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research\nInstitute signed a collaboration agreement with Hengqin New Area Management\nCommittee on the establishment of a base for industry-academia collaboration on\nHengqin. According to the agreement, the base will rely on UM\u2019s three state key\nlaboratories to carry out R&D activities in chip design, IoT applications\nfor smart cities, materials technology, Chinese medicine quality research, and\ncancer diagnosis and treatment. In October 2019, UM inaugurated the Zhuhai UM\nScience and Technology Research Institute and established a joint laboratory\nwith Huafa Group. In December this year, the Hengqin branch of UM\u2019s three state\nkey laboratories was inaugurated. UM also helps the national smart\nsupercomputing platform in Hengqin to establish a branch in Macao.<\/p>

Looking ahead, UM will continue to help develop\nMacao, integrate with the Greater Bay Area to serve the country, and increase\nits degree of internationalisation to make a greater contribution to humanity. <\/p>
