Their research\nprovides new evidence and a corresponding mechanism on how oxytocin causes\nincreased associations among inter-individual differences, and also provides inspirations\nfor future research on the clinical and non-clinical applications of oxytocin. The\nresearch results have been accepted by several internationally renowned\njournals, such as <i>Human Brain Mapping<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Oxytocin, an important neuropeptide,\nhas been proven to be closely linked to social adaptation, pro-social behaviours,\nand social cognition. At the behavioural level, oxytocin can modulate human\nabilities in recognising and memorising social cues such as faces and emotions.\nSpecifically, some researchers have found that oxytocin can boost recognition\nmemory for faces and increase amygdala responses to emotional faces. In\naddition, previous studies have shown that oxytocin can promote social bonding,\nnavigate social interactions, and regulate the processing of\nsalient information.<\/p>\n\n<p>Self-other distinction\nplays a crucial role in daily social interactions and decision-making. Moreover,\nfaces serve as the most salient stimuli in making social decisions that involve\noneself or others. People adjust their altruistic behaviours and corresponding\neconomic decisions according to the similarity between their faces and those of\nothers.<\/p>\n\n<p>The research team investigated\nthe effects of oxytocin on the relationship between individuals\u2019 functional\nconnectivity and behaviour. They found that oxytocin significantly enhances the\nlinks between resting-state functional connectivity, task-state functional connectivity,\nand task behaviour performance. Subsequent analysis further revealed that the\nenhancement in these connections can be explained in part by the fact that oxytocin\nalters the functional connectivity of the brain in both resting and task\nstates, mainly involving areas such as the limbic system, the prefrontal\ncortex, the temporal pole, and the temporoparietal junction.<\/p>\n\n<p>The study employed a\nconnectome-based predictive model (CPM) to examine whether functional\nconnectivity in different states can predict task behaviour performance, and whether\noxytocin can improve the prediction accuracy of functional connectivity in behavioural\nperformance. A correlation analysis was conducted at the whole-brain level to\nassess the correlation between resting-state and task-state functional\nconnectivity, and evaluate the effect of oxytocin on the relationship between\nfunctional connectivity in the two states. CPM can predict cognitive behaviour\nor personality traits on the basis of functional connectivity and has been widely\nused in brain-wide association studies (BWAS). It is often used to extract the\nmost relevant features from functional connectivity in order to predict individual\nvariability in behaviour, personality traits, or psychiatric symptoms. Many previous\nstudies have demonstrated the robustness of CPM in predicting individual\ndifferences in fluid intelligence, attention, creativity, and cheating behaviours.<\/p>\n\n<p>The study found that the\ngroup administered with oxytocin demonstrated significantly higher predictive\naccuracy in CPM compared to those administered with a placebo, in both resting\nand task states. Furthermore, the correlation between resting-state and task-state\nfunctional connectivity was notably stronger in the oxytocin group compared to\nthe placebo group. Additional findings indicated that the CPM classifier could\nsignificantly distinguish the functional connectivity between oxytocin and\nplacebo groups in both task and resting states. In the oxytocin group, most of\nthe functional connections with larger weights in the CPM classifier were\nsignificantly correlated with behavioural performance, an effect not observed\nin the placebo group. These findings provide new evidence and a corresponding mechanism\nfor how neuropeptides contribute to increased associations among inter-individual\ndifferences across different levels. They may inspire future interdisciplinary\nresearch on the clinical and non-clinical applications of neuropeptides.<\/p>\n\n<p>Zhang Haoming and Chen Kun, PhD students at UM\u2019s Centre for Cognitive\nand Brain Sciences are the co-first authors of the study.
