The Macao SAR government today (7 October)\npresented the Macao Science and Technology Awards 2020. The University of Macao\n(UM) has won 11 awards, accounting for nearly 70 per percent of all the awards\npresented this year. UM\u2019s postgraduate students have also performed very well,\nwith 13 doctoral students and three master\u2019s students receiving the Scientific\nand Technological R&D Award for Postgraduates.<\/p>\n\n

Out of the 16 prizes, UM has\nreceived 11 prizes, including three second prizes and three third prizes in the\nNatural Science Award category; a first prize, a second prize, and two third\nprizes in the Technological Invention Award category; as well as a third prize\nin the Science and Technology Progress Award category.<\/p>\n\n

Greta Mok, an associate\nprofessor in the Faculty of Science and Technology at UM, is the only female\nscholar from Macao to receive an award this year. In her speech, Prof Mok said\nthat for those scientific researchers who have made Macao their homes, it is a\ntremendous honour to receive the Macao Science and Technology Awards, which\nrepresent the highest form of recognition and commendation for their work. She\nadded that she and her fellow researchers would continue to work hard in order\nto meet the expectations of the SAR government and the country, give full play\nto their strengths, enhance collaboration with researchers and institutions in\nthe Greater Bay Area, and strive to industrialise their inventions to benefit\nthe public. Prof Mok further said that they would never forget why they chose a\nscientific career in the first place, and would continue to pursue excellence\nand nurture young scientists in order to contribute to the sustainable\ndevelopment of Macao.<\/p>\n\n

UM\u2019s research strategy can\nbe summarised as \u2018focusing on key areas\u2019, \u2018making use of advantages\u2019, \u2018creating\npeaks\u2019, \u2018highlighting characteristics\u2019, and \u2018strengthening cooperation\u2019. In\naddition to giving priority to disciplines that reflects both Macao\u2019s unique\ncharacteristics and global trends, the university also provides full support to\nthe three state key laboratories (focused\non quality research in traditional Chinese medicine, microelectronics, and internet\nof things applications for smart cities, respectively), three emerging research fields (precision medicine, advanced\nmaterials, and regional oceanology), as well as three interdisciplinary\nresearch fields (artificial intelligence and robotics, cognitive and brain\nsciences, and data sciences), in order to encourage interdisciplinary collaborations,\nespecially the integration of humanities and social sciences with modern\ntechnology.The awards represent official recognition of the university\u2019s\nresearch capacity and will motivate the university to continue to promote\ntechnological innovation, industry-academia collaboration, and technology\ntransfer.<\/p>\n\n
