{"id":280986,"date":"2022-11-01T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-01T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/54507-2\/"},"modified":"2023-01-10T10:42:32","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T02:42:32","slug":"54507","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/54507\/","title":{"rendered":"Estudo da UM melhora as c\u00e9lulas solares perovskite de dimens\u00f5es mistas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A\nresearch team led by Xing Guichuan, professor in the Institute of Applied\nPhysics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) at the University of Macau (UM), and\na research team led by Su Chenliang, professor at Shenzhen University, have\nidentified a key factor for\nenhancing the\nphotovoltaic performance of mixed-dimensional 2D\/3D perovskite solar cells, which\nwill help to promote the commercialisation of the solar cells. The research\nresults have been published in the internationally-renowned academic journal <i>Nature Communications<\/i>.<\/p><p>For\nmore than a decade, halide perovskites have become the research frontier of the\nphotovoltaic field due to their excellent semiconducting properties.\nTraditional halide perovskites are presented with an ABX<sub>3<\/sub>-type\nthree-dimensional (3D) crystallographic structure. Used as the photoactive\nlayer in single-junction solar cells, halide perovskites have achieved a\ncertified efficiency of up to 25.7 per cent. However, conventional 3D\nperovskites suffer from poor stability. Dimensionality modulation is confirmed\nto be an effective countermeasure, and among low-dimensional perovskite\nderivatives, 2D perovskites have been widely demonstrated to be more stable\nthan their 3D counterparts. Naturally, mixed-dimensional 2D\/3D perovskite films\nare considered promising to combine the advantages of 2D perovskites in\nstability and 3D perovskites in solar conversion. Besides, detrimental ion\nmigration in 2D perovskites is suppressed, and defects at the grain boundaries\nand surfaces of 3D perovskites are usually passivated by 2D perovskites.\nTherefore, mixed-dimensional 2D\/3D perovskite solar cells have attracted huge\nattention. However, for a long time, the energy conversion efficiency was lower\nthan expected, significantly limiting the commercialisation of these solar\ncells, and the mechanism behind this limitation remained unclear.<\/p><p>Given\nthis situation, the research teams of UM and Shenzhen University have jointly\nconducted a study and have revealed the unique PCB effect in mixed-dimensional\n2D\/3D perovskites for the first time. The researchers have found that in\ndarkness, the 2D perovskite components do not hinder carrier transport; While\nunder illumination, the built-in potential of the 2D\/3D perovskite interface is\nenhanced, and given the phase arrangement that the 2D components intersperse in\nthe 3D perovskite matrix, the transport of photo-generated electrons would be\nhindered by photoinduced potential barriers. Meanwhile, photo-generated holes\nwould be trapped by photo-generated pitfalls. This mechanism can explain the\nusually lower short-circuit current and inferior fill factor of\nmixed-dimensional 2D\/3D perovskite solar cells, providing renewed theoretical\nguidance for optimising the performance of mixed-dimensional 2D\/3D perovskite\nsolar cells.<\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p>The\ncorresponding authors of this study are Prof Xing and Prof Su. The first author\nis Yu Dejian, a postdoctoral researcher in the IAPME.
