The sensor developed by the team can rapidly and quantitatively\ndetect formaldehyde pollution and food preservatives in the living environment.\nThe research results have attracted much attention in the field of formaldehyde\ndetection and have been published in the internationally renowned journal <i>Nano Letters<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Formaldehyde is widely used\nin our daily life in clothing and textiles, food preservation, interior\ndecoration, automobile manufacturing, and other products. The formaldehyde\nreleased in the living environment can undergo condensation reaction with the\namino group on the protein when it enters the body, destroying the protein\nstructure and making the protein dysfunctional or out of balance. In a more\nserious case, formaldehyde can cause cancer and threaten human life and health.\nThe International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has listed formaldehyde\nas a \u2018known human carcinogen\u2019 associated with sinus and nasopharyngeal cancer.\nThe recent news that \u2018Indoor formaldehyde causes leukemia\u2019 has aggravated people&#8217;s worries\nabout the problem of formaldehyde in the environment. In view of the urgency\nand severity of the current situation, it is of great significance to develop a\ndevice that can sensitively detect formaldehyde in complex environments.<\/p>\n\n<p>Inspired by the hydrophilic\/hydrophobic\n\u2018Janus structure\u2019 of biological aquaporins, which can control the passage of\nwater molecules through the cell membrane, the research team assembled coordination\npolymers on a porous alumina membrane to adjust the hydrophilic\/hydrophobic\nbalance and determine whether the interface wettability affects the\nformaldehyde detection. It was found that the hydrophobic\/hydrophilic balance\nof the heterogenous structure plays an important role in the detection of\nformaldehyde. The hydrophobic alumina barrier layer exerts a special\nnano-confinement effect, while the hydrophilic coordination polymer surface is\nbeneficial to attract highly water-soluble formaldehyde into the channel.\nFormaldehyde efficiently condenses with amino groups in the confined space of\nnanochannels to generate new imines, resulting in changes in surface charge and\nwettability at the same time. This combined effect greatly improves the\ndetection capability of the sensor. The newly developed sensor can accurately\nquantify forma<ins cite=\"mailto:M65988270@outlook.com\" datetime=\"2022-05-18T18:46\">l<\/ins>dehyde over a broad range of 100 pM\nto 1 mM by monitoring the ion current.<\/p>\n\n<p>The nanosensor highly\nsimulates the hydrophobic-hydrophilic \u2018Janus structure\u2019 in biological\naquaporins, and for the first time reveals the contribution of nanochannel\nmembrane interface wettability to the high-performance sensing of formaldehyde\nfrom the perspective of the innovation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic balance.\nAt the same time, a major breakthrough has been made in the research on\nformaldehyde detection. In a broader sense, this study profoundly demonstrates\nthe intrinsic connection between nanosensor structure and function, and\nprovides a template for the design of other efficient nanochannel sensors.<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Zhang Xuanjun is the\ncorresponding author of the study, and PhD student Zhang Dan is the\nfirst author.
