{"id":267333,"date":"2022-05-16T16:11:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T08:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/53662-2\/"},"modified":"2022-05-16T18:03:39","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T10:03:39","slug":"53662","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/53662\/","title":{"rendered":"UM develops bacteria-mimetic nanomedicine to enhance cancer therapies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A research group led\nby Wang Ruibing, associate professor in the Institute of Chinese Medical\nScience, University of Macau (UM), has developed a bacteria-mimetic\nsupramolecular nanomedicine by immune cells in vivo, which can realise\ncell-hitchhiking delivery to solid tumours in targeted cancer therapies. The\nresearch findings have been published in the world-renowned multidisciplinary\njournal <i>Science Advances<\/i>.<\/p><p>In recent years,\ncells have received increasing attention as potential drug carriers due to\ntheir high biocompatibility, long systemic circulation, and accumulation in\nspecific tissues. The in vitro preparation of cell-based carriers often\ninvolves complex and time-consuming processes that may damage cells and cause\ncontamination. Immune rejection may occur when cell-based formulations are\napplied to different individuals. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to\ndevelop a new formulation of medicine that may hitchhike cells directly in vivo\nto realise cell-hitchhiking drug delivery.<\/p><p>In this study, the\nteam developed an in vivo strategy to efficiently and stably hitchhike\nphagocytic immune cells via supramolecular self-assembly of bacteria-mimetic\nnanomedicine intracellularly for enhanced immune cell-based drug delivery. In\nresponse to tumour inflammation, immune cells carry intracellular nanomedicine\naggregates to the tumour tissues. An initial photothermal treatment of the tumour\nwould induce tumour damage and enhance the tumour inflammatory signals, thereby\nrecruiting more immune cells (including carriers that contain intracellular nanomedicine\naggregates) and leading to a significantly improved accumulation of\nnanomedicine in the tumour for further photothermal treatment and\nimmunotherapy.<\/p><p>Titled &#8216;In Vivo Hitchhiking\nof Immune Cells by Intracellular Self-assembly of Bacteria-mimetic Nanomedicine\nfor Targeted Therapy of Melanoma\u2019, the paper highlighting this research result has\nbeen published in the world-renowned multidisciplinary journal <i>Science Advances<\/i>. Prof Wang is the lead\ncorresponding author and Simon Lee, Distinguished Professor of UM, is the co-corresponding author. Postdoctoral fellow\nGao Cheng and master\u2019s student Wang Qingfu are the co-first authors. UM PhD\nstudents Li Junyan and Cheryl Kuong, research assistant Wei Jianwen, and\npostdoctoral fellow Xie Beibei also made important contributions to this project.\nThe study was supported by the Dr
