Cai Xiaochuan, University of Macau Development\nFoundation Chair Professor of Applied Mathematics, who is also an associate\ndean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the director of the Centre\nfor Applied Mathematics, was the keynote speaker. He gave a lecture titled\n\u2018Mathematical Algorithms and Clinical Tests for Predicting Cardiovascular and\nCerebrovascular Health\u2019. The talk attracted many UM faculty members and\nstudents.<\/p><p>During the lecture, Cai discussed\nthe recent applications of supercomputers and computational biomechanics in\nprecision medicine. According to him, the human body has about 100,000\nkilometres of blood vessels, large and small, which are constantly supplying nutrients\nto all organs at a rate of about one second per cycle. As we age, the health of\nblood vessels declines. Haemodynamics can be used to analyse health problems\nrelated to blood flow, such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, as\nwell as hypertension, from a mathematical and physical perspective.
