Zhou Wanhuan, head of the\nDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineering and professor of geotechnical\nengineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology, who is also a coordinator\nof the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, was the\nkeynote speaker. The event combined both online and in-person elements and\nattracted a full-house audience.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the\nspatial urbanisation system, the utilisation of underground space resources is\na global, multi-factor, and three-dimensional process and has become the top\npriority of urban sustainable development. During the talk, Prof Zhou\nintroduced two underground space development technologies, namely shield\ntunneling and immersed tunneling, as well as the latest research topics and hotspots\nof interdisciplinary innovation. Drawing examples from real-world engineering\ncases, the speaker also discussed the recent research progress in the physical\nmechanism and the applications of big data analysis in tunneling carried out by\nher research group at UM.<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof\nZhou joined UM in 2009 after obtaining a PhD degree from the Hong Kong\nPolytechnic University in 2008. She has undertaken multiple projects with scientific\nresearch grants provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the\nNational Natural Science Foundation of China, the Department of Science and\nTechnology of Guangdong Province, and the Science and Technology Development\nFund of Macao. She has also published more than 100 papers in SCI-indexed\ninterdisciplinary journals in geotechnical engineering and civil engineering.
