Combining both\nonline and in-person elements, the two-day event attracted over 400 participants,\nincluding renowned scholars, biomedical experts, industry practitioners,\nresearchers, and students from the United States, Singapore, mainland China, and\nMacao. During the event, participants discussed the latest progress in\ntranslational medicine, stem cell research, and the clinical application of\nresearch results in the two areas.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>According to\nGe Wei, vice rector (research) of UM, the <a name=\"_Hlk93158792\">Greater Bay\nArea<\/a> is one of the medical technology centres in China and UM plays a vital\nrole in its development. To facilitate the implementation of the national strategy,\nUM is committed to developing biomedical sciences and training outstanding\nprofessionals in related fields. He also mentioned UM\u2019s being ranked No 11\namong all higher education institutions in mainland China and Macao according\nto the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, showing international\nrecognition of the university\u2019s growing reputation. <\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>FHS Dean Deng\nChuxia said that the conference had gone through several alterations because of\nthe epidemic, adding that the persistence of all colleagues and the patience of\nthe invited speakers and other participants were key to the success of the event.\nHe also said that the conference provided a platform not only for scientists,\nexperts, and researchers from the Greater Bay Area and other regions to share\ntheir latest research findings, but also for students to exchange ideas with\nrenowned scholars. <\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>The two-day conference\nincluded three keynote speeches and 17 session talks. Prof Rudolf Jaenisch, a\nworld-renowned scientist and a member of the United States National Academy of\nSciences, delivered a speech on the genomic integration and expression of\nSARS-CoV-2 into patients\u2019 genome and how it affects nuclear acid tests. Prof\nSong Erwei, an eminent scholar and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,\ngave a speech on tumour ecology and immunotherapy and discussed\nbreast-conserving surgery for breast cancer and its significance. Prof Wu Jun,\na scholar at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, revealed how\nto increase chimera formation by increasing the competitiveness of xenogeneic\ncells in a host embryo, which is crucial for the generation of human organs in\nanimals. The session talks covered a wide range of topics, such as converting\nfibroblasts to cardiomyocytes by using small chemicals, using cancer patients-derived\norganoids for precision diagnosis and therapy, new findings about the\nearly-stage post-transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells, and the\ntriggering of anti-viral response following the binding of M protein of\nSARS-COV-2 virus to TREM-2 on T lymphocytes of the host.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>This year, the\nconference\u2019s review and award committee received over 100 entries, including\nover 70 posters and 30 research images. Dr Xing Fuqiang, a UM alumnus who is currently\na postdoctoral fellow at the\nFifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, and 11 other young\nscholars, received the Best Poster Award. Huang Borong, a PhD student at UM, and\nfour other young scholars, received the Best Image Award. <\/p><p>The conference\nwas hosted by the FHS and organised by the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology\nResearch Institute, with assistance from the Macau Society for Stem Cell\nResearch, Zhuhai Hengqin ImStem Biotechnology Co Ltd, STEMCELL Technology Inc, the Fifth Affiliated\nHospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai People\u2019s Hospital, Ministry of\nEducation Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology at UM, and Becton,\nDickinson (BD) and Company. Guests attending the opening ceremony included Pang\nHeong Keong, clinical director of Conde S Janu\u00e1rio Hospital; Chan Chou Weng, a\ndivision head in the Economic and Technological Development Bureau; and Liu\nLianggang, a technology consultant of the Science and Technology Development\nFund of Macao SAR.<\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p><\/p><table style=\"width:
