{"id":242422,"date":"2021-07-01T16:28:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T08:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/52225-2\/"},"modified":"2021-08-19T11:31:23","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T03:31:23","slug":"52225","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/52225\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigador da UM desenvolve insectos rob\u00f3ticos de ultra-alta agilidade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>Inspired by agile\ninsects in nature, a research team led by Prof Zhong Junwen, assistant professor\nin the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) of the University of Macau (UM)\nand a member of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics of UM, has developed\nrobotic insects that are only 3cm long with ultrahigh agility and a controlled trajectory.\nThe study has been published in <i>Science\nRobotics<\/i>, the top journal in the field of robotics. This is the first time\nthat a research study by Macao scholars has been published in this journal. So\nfar, the journal has published less than ten papers from higher education\ninstitutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.<\/p><p>In nature, animals that\nare fast and agile often have a survival advantage. A key fundamental challenge\nin this study is to develop insect-scale soft robots with ultrahigh agility and\ngood trajectory control comparable to those of real agile insects, and the technical\ndifficulty lies in achieving a fast linear moving speed while maintaining the\ncapability of the robots to make turns. In nature, insects with flexible bodies\ncan dynamically tune the friction force with secretions between their feet and\nthe ground to improve locomotion. In this study, Prof Zhong\u2019s team emulated similar\nschemes by adjusting the electrostatic force between the robot\u2019s feet and the ground\nto achieve both ultrahigh agility and a controlled trajectory. The soft robots developed\nby the team can reach a highest relative centripetal acceleration of 28\nbody-length\/s2, which is better than that of common insects. Through a series\nof demonstrations, the team has proved that the soft robots can pass through a\n120cm-long track in a maze within 5.6 seconds and carry a 180mg on-board sensor\nto record a gas concentration route map.<\/p><p>Furthermore, the\nteam has also developed an untethered version of the soft robot, which is battery-powered\nand can complete a 27.9cm-long S-shape path in 36.9 seconds. An important\npotential application for such robots is that after a disaster such as an\nearthquake, a large number of these robots can carry sensors that can move\nswiftly through the rubble and record and transmit valuable information during\nthe search and rescue process. The related paper, Titled \u2018Electrostatic Footpads\nEnable Agile Insect-scale Soft Robots with Trajectory Control\u2019, is the result\nof collaboration between UM, Tsinghua University, and the University of\nCalifornia, Berkeley.<\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p>Prof Zhong obtained\na PhD degree in electrical science and engineering from Huazhong University of\nScience and Technology in 2016. After graduation, he continued with his\nresearch at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Japanese Institute\nof Physics and Chemistry. In recent years, he has published more than 50\nacademic papers in internationally renowned journals, with a total of over\n4,000 citations. His main research interest is flexible electromechanical\nsystems, particularly flexible robots, flexible sensors, and actuators.
