Li\nShaoping, deputy director and distinguished professor of the State Key\nLaboratory for Quality Research in Chinese Medicine at the University of Macau (UM), has\nbeen appointed by the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USPC) as a member\nof its Herbal Medicines Compendium \u2013 East Asia Expert Panel and will serve for a\nfive-year term. The standards of the United\nStates Pharmacopeia<\/i> (USP) are one of the most authoritative standards\nworldwide and it plays an important roles globally in the quality control of\ndrugs and healthcare products. Prof Li\u2019s appointment to the expert committee\nshows the professional community\u2019s recognition of Macao in the development of international\nstandards for Chinese medicines.<\/p>
The Herbal\nMedicines Compendium \u2013 East Asia Expert Panel aims to review the scientific,\ntechnical, and policy-related aspects of herbal medicines included in the USP,\nparticularly the standards for traditional medicines in East Asia and related benchmarks.\nThe standards of drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal medicines documented in\nthe USP are the national standards of the US, and are used in more than 140\ncountries. Achieving a reputable, authoritative, and internationally recognised\nstandard is key to the globalisation and modernisation of Chinese medicines.<\/p>
A\nworld-renowned scholar in the field of pharmaceutical analysis, Prof Li\nspecialises in quality control and active ingredient research in Chinese\nmedicines. His research team has contributed more than 10 per cent and 5 per\ncent, respectively, to UM\u2019s rankings in the Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI)\nin the fields of Chemistry and Pharmacology & Toxicology, and the\nuniversity is ranked among the top 1 per cent in both fields. In recognition of\nhis outstanding achievements in herbal glycoanalysis and the development of\nquality control methods for Chinese medicines, Prof Li was included on the\nPower List 2020: Around the World in 60 Scientists, released earlier by The Analytical Scientist<\/i>. He has played\na pivotal role in the establishment of a joint laboratory between UM and the\nUnited States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USPC) for the development of quality\nstandards for Chinese medicines. It is the first joint laboratory established\nbetween a university and the USPC. He and his research team also conduct\nresearch on the challenges and key issues in the development of international\nquality standards for Chinese medicines. Based on these studies, they have\nproposed new strategies for quality control of Chinese medicines, which are not\nonly practical but also meet the requirements of international quality\nstandards. As the result, six Chinese medicine standards established have been\nrecognised by USP and were awarded certificates.<\/p>
Prof\nLi’s team has also established a qualitative and quantitative analysis method, known\nas the \u2018Saccharide Mapping\u2019 method to determine the specificity of\npolysaccharides, based on the material basis characteristics of traditional\nChinese medicine decoction. This method has received a number of national\ninvention patents. The related papers have won a first prize at the Shimadzu\nCup National Excellent Paper Award in Pharmaceutical Analysis and a first prize\nin the excellent paper category from the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association,\nfor presenting a solution to a long-standing bottleneck in the development and\nproduction of carbohydrate drugs. In addition, the patented technology,\n\u2018saccharide mapping\u2019, has been successfully used in the quality evaluation of Ganoderma lucidum<\/i> dietary supplements in\nthe US, which has attracted considerable attention from related industries.<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>
At\npresent, Prof Li’s research team is conducting a key research project under the\nMacao Science and Technology Development Fund, titled \u2018Research and Development\nof International Standards of Selected Traditional Chinese Medicines\u2019, and a\nproject supported by Guangdong Provincial Key R&D Programme, titled \u2018Modernisation\nof Traditional Chinese Medicine in Lingnan\u2019. The projects will help to further\nenhance the leading position of UM in the formulation of international\nstandards for traditional Chinese medicines.<\/p>
