Three postgraduate students in the Institute of Chinese\nMedical Sciences (ICMS), University of Macau (UM) recently received a Best Oral\nPresentation Award in the PhD student category, a Best Oral Presentation Award\nin the master\u2019s student category, and a Best Poster Award, respectively, at the\nFourth International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food.<\/p>
The event attracted over 700 experts from 67\ncounties and regions in the field of food science and natural products research.\nThe four recipients of the Best Oral Presentation Award in the PhD category were\nselected from students from Malaysia, India, New Zealand, Spain, Finland,\nChile, Italy, mainland China, and Macao; the eight awardees of the Best Oral\nPresentation Award in the master\u2019s student category were selected from 24 students;\nand the eight best posters were selected from the 110 posters exhibited at the\nsymposium.<\/p>
Linghu Kegang, a PhD student in Assistant Professor\nYu Hua\u2019s research group, gave a presentation titled \u2018Sigesbeckia Orientalis L\nExtract Alleviated the Collagen Type II-induced Arthritis through Inhibiting Multi-Targets-Mediated\nSynovial Hyperplasia and Inflammation\u2019. By combining a multidisciplinary\nresearch strategy that integrates phytochemistry, analytical chemistry, cellular\npharmacodynamics, network pharmacology, molecular biology, and biochemistry, Linghu\u2019s\nstudy systemically compared and investigated the three plant species of the\nanti-rheumatic herb Siegesbeckiae Herba, which will provide a research basis\nand scientific evidence to further improve the quality standards of\nmulti-origin Chinese herbal medicines and guide their rational clinical use. Linghu\nreceived a Best Oral Presentation Award at the forum for PhD students.<\/p>
Xiong Shihang, a master\u2019s student in Prof Yu Hua\u2019s research\ngroup, gave a presentation titled \u2018Interaction of Combined Glycyrrhizic Acid on\nthe Pharmacokinetics and Liver Toxicity of Methotrexate\u2019. His study provided\nresearch data for the clinical combination of Chinese herbal component\nglycyrrhizic acid to improve the hepatotoxicity reduced by methotrexate (a\nfirst-line anti-rheumatic drug). Xiong received a Best Oral Presentation Award at\nthe forum for master\u2019s students.<\/p>
Miao Lingchao, a PhD student, presented a systemic\ninvestigation on the biological activities and mechanisms of six flavonoids\n(Apigenin, Luteolin, Baicalein, Baicalin, Vitexin and Isoorientin) and how they\ncan improve the high-glucose and dexamethasone induced insulin-resistance in\nHepG-2 cells. Simultaneously, she investigated the metabolisms of the six\nflavonoids by the insulin-resistant HepG-2 cells in order to find the\nappropriate methods to improve their bioavailability as well as the biological\nactivities. Mio received a Best Poster Award<\/p>
The Fourth International Symposium on\nPhytochemicals in Medicine and Food was organised by the International\nAssociation of Dietetic Nutrition and Safety, the Phytochemical Society of\nEurope, and the Phytochemical Society of Asia (PSA), and was hosted by\nNorthwest University, Shaanxi Normal University, Dalian Polytechnic University,\nthe University of Hong Kong, and the University of Vigo. It was held through a\ncombination of online and offline formats, with conference presentations,\nkeynote presentations, invited presentations, oral presentations, and poster\nsessions to promote peer-to-peer academic exchange in multiple fields. This\nyear\u2019s conference allowed participants to exchange ideas on and learn more\nabout the latest research progress in phytochemistry, natural products,\nfunctional foods, and related research fields.<\/p>
