A research\nproject from the University of Macau (UM), titled \u2018Research on Key Technologies\nand Platforms for Collaborative Intelligence-Driven Autonomous -Driving\nVehicles\u2019, has been listed under the Macao Funding Scheme for Key R&D\nProjects, becoming one of the largest research projects in Macao\u2019s history.\nThanks to this research project, the university\u2019s faculty members and students\nwill hopefully be able to experience autonomous vehicles on campus in the near\nfuture.<\/p>
Autonomous\nvehicle technology is an application of artificial intelligence and represents\nthe future of the automobile industry. An important part of smart city\ndevelopment, autonomous vehicle technology is developing rapidly with the\nsupport of China\u2019s Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan and\nInnovative Development Strategy for Smart Automobiles. However, despite\ngovernment support, the technology still faces many challenges in its\napplication. In this project, the UM research team will tackle two major\nissues, namely \u2018swarm intelligence and cooperative control of connected\nvehicles in large-scale and complex situations\u2019, and \u2018high robustness and\nadaptability of autonomous driving in uncertain open environments\u2019. The\nresearchers will comprehensively study and examine the applications of\ntechnologies in the fields of the Internet of Things, 5G telecommunication,\ncloud computing, and artificial intelligence, in the development of autonomous\nvehicles.<\/p>
The team is\nformed by members of various leading institutions in the field of autonomous\nvehicles in mainland China, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the\nNational University of Defense Technology, Baidu, and Haylion Technologies. The\nperson in charge of the project is Xu Chengzhong, leader of the smart transport\ntrack in UM\u2019s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, who is\nalso the dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and chair professor of\nthe Department of Computer and Information Science. As a public university with\nthe most state key laboratories in the west of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao\nGreater Bay Area, UM has attained many research breakthroughs over the past two\ndecades, thanks to the support of the central and Macao SAR governments. The\nautonomous vehicle project was made possible with the joint efforts of\ninstitutions between Macao and mainland China. With the participation of\nexperts and scholars from both sides, the project is expected to meet the\ndemands of a new era and improve people\u2019s quality of life.<\/p>

Launched by\nthe Macao Science and Technology Development Fund, the Macao Funding Scheme for\nKey R&D Projects provides support for projects in three fields, namely\nartificial intelligence, the development and quality control of drugs based on\ntraditional Chinese medicine, and precision medicine. The scheme is expected to\nintegrate technological resources in Macao in order to promote\ninterdisciplinary collaboration, collaborative innovation, and the\ncommercialisation of research results.<\/p>
