The\nUniversity of Macau (UM) and Peng Cheng Laboratory in Guangdong province\nrecently signed a strategic collaboration agreement via video conferencing,\nmarking the beginning of a long-term strategic collaborative relationship that\nwill combine the strengths of both institutions. According to the agreement,\nboth parties will conduct collaborative research in artificial intelligence\n(AI), network and communication, cyberspace security, and robotics. The\npartnership also reflects the determination of both parties to carry out\ncross-regional cooperation in scientific research during the epidemic.<\/p>
At the\nceremony, Yonghua Song, rector of UM, and Gao Wen, director of Peng Cheng\nLaboratory, signed a strategic collaboration framework agreement on behalf of\nUM and Peng Cheng Laboratory, respectively. Peng Cheng Laboratory is a laboratory\napproved by the government of Guangdong province and established by the\ngovernment of Shenzhen city. Dedicated to serving the needs and strategic\nlayout of the country and Guangdong province, the lab conducts regional and\nmulti-disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and large-scale collaborative basic\nresearch and applied basic research projects. It mainly focuses on three\nresearch fields, namely AI, network and communication, and cyberspace security.\nThe lab has initiated eight key research projects and will gradually develop\nrelated scientific research platforms. The lab also collaborates with national\nkey laboratories in related fields, with the aim of maximising their strengths.\nThe lab strives to take the lead in China\u2019s science and technology development\nand become a force behind the country\u2019s strategic development in this field.<\/p>
According to\nGe Wei, vice rector (research) of UM, under this agreement, UM and Peng Cheng\nLab will jointly carry out major scientific research projects to meet the needs\nof national and social development; they will also study basic,\nforward-looking, and strategic theoretical issues, as well as develop core\ntechnologies. Both parties will use their strengths to enhance communication\nand mutual visits related to specific projects, strengthen exchange of\nresearchers, promote the commercialisation of both institutions\u2019 research\nresults, enhance the competitiveness of China\u2019s scientific and technological\nindustry, as well as research achievements in AI, network and communication,\ncyberspace security and robotics.<\/p>
According to\nZou Peng, executive deputy director of Peng Cheng Laboratory, the lab is\ncommitted to carrying out strategic cooperation and implementing the concept of\nco-construction since its establishment two years ago. Currently, there are\nmore than 150 strategic cooperation units in the lab, which jointly carry out\nmajor scientific research projects and develop scientific research platforms.<\/p>
\nWith the rapid development of science and technology, Macao is also vigorously\npromoting the development of science and technology to establish a new\ndevelopment model of \u2018Building a better Macao through science and education\u2019.\nWith the strong support of the central government, Macao SAR government, and\npeople from all sectors of society, UM has taken as its responsibility to\nsupport the government\u2019s effort to build a better Macao through science and\neducation. The university carries out interdisciplinary collaborations, focuses\non its strength areas, strengthens collaboration in scientific research and the\ncommercialisation of research results, and actively supports the development of\nMacao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In recent years, UM\nhas made rapid progress in scientific and technological innovation. It is now\nranked among the top 1 per cent in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI)\ndatabase in seven disciplines. Over the years, it has produced a large number\nof outstanding graduates for Macao and the country. The university has also\nestablished a \u20183 + 3 + 3\u2019 strategic layout for scientific research and\nvigorously promotes interdisciplinary research. For instance, the university\u2019s\nState Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City and Joint Laboratory\nof Artificial Intelligence and Robotics conduct cutting-edge research in fields\nsuch as artificial intelligence, network and communication, cyberspace\nsecurity, and robotics, and have achieved remarkable results.<\/p>

UM\nrepresentatives attending the ceremony included Xu Chengzhong, dean of the\nFaculty of Science and Technology; Yang Zhixin, director of the Research\nServices and Knowledge Transfer Office; as well as professors Gong Zhiguo and\nMa Shaodan from the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City.\nRepresentatives of Peng Cheng Laboratory included Chen Changwen, deputy\ndirector of the lab; Wang Lixin, head of the Office of General Affairs; Gary\nLi, director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre; Qui Jingfei,\ndeputy director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre; Chen Yupeng,\nexecutive assistant of the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre; and Kou\nHongning from the Office of International Affairs.<\/p>
