\n\tMs. Zhang Yan and Ms. Zhang Yiran, two master’s students of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) at the University of Macau (UM), have passed rigorous evaluation and won full scholarships to study the PhD programme in Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics at the University of Iowa, one of the major national-level research-focused universities in the United States with world renown. The University of Iowa’s College of Pharmacy has a history of 125 years and the Department of Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics is known for academic meticulousness and research excellence. The two will leave for the US this autumn.

\n\tZhang Yiran is a second-year student enrolled in the master’s programme in Medicinal Administration. Her supervisor is Prof. Bian Ying, coordinator of the programme. Zhang Yan changed her major from Chinese Medicine to Medical Administration and is currently in her third-year study supervised by Dr. Cheng Li Jen. The two said what has impressed them most during their studies at UM is the teaching staff’s meticulous attitude towards research, the open academic atmosphere, and the multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment. They said that they and their fellow students have benefited a great deal from the professors’ meticulous attitude towards teaching and their commitment to teaching by example. They added that the interactive teaching methods, such as oral presentation in class, team research after class, and theme-based discussions, not only have helped them hone presentation skills and analytical skills, but have also instilled team spirit in them and gradually enhanced their research capabilities. They said these skills have greatly helped their applications for the scholarship.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey also mentioned that UM offers students many opportunities to attend various kinds of talks and seminars by distinguished scholars, such as the UM Distinguished Lecture Series. They think that participation in these extracurricular activities has expanded their horizons, developed their endurance, persistence and team spirit, and enabled them to make a lot of friends.<\/p>\n

\n\tEver since its founding, ICMS’s research strengths have been improving steadily, and its research achievements have gained international recognition. On 25 January 2011, the State Key Laboratory for Quality Research in Chinese Medicine was unveiled. Many ICMS students have won scholarships to world-renowned universities or institutions, such as the Medical University of Vienna and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Germany. In order to produce more specialists in Chinese medicine, in the 2011\/2012 academic year ICMS launched the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences Programme. The programme aims to develop students’ ability to carry out cross-disciplinary fundamental research, medical diagnosis and monitoring, and new drug and product development.
