This issue\nof<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal;\"> \u201cumagazine\u201d<\/i> focuses on people. <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal;\">umagazine<\/i> invited three master scientists, Prof Andrew Yao, his wife Prof\nFrances Yao, and his former teacher Prof David Chung-Laung Liu, for an\ninterview to share their life experiences and some insightful views on higher\neducation and success. Another person that shares his inspiring life story in\nthis issue is Prof Qian Tao from the Department of Mathematics, who received\nthe sole first prize of the Macao Science and Technology Award in the Natural\nScience Award category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of\nMacau (UM) is now implementing a \u201c4-in-1\u201d educational model that consists of\ndiscipline-specific education, general education, research and internship\neducation, and community and peer education, as part of its efforts to develop\ninto a world-class university with characteristics. How can UM\u2019s student\naffairs professionals contribute to the realisation of this objective,\nespecially after UM moves to the new campus? In this issue\u2019s feature article\n\u201cNew Direction, New Start\u201d, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal;\">umagazine<\/i> interviewed UM Vice Rector (Student Affairs)\nProf. Haydn Chen, UM\u2019s Dean of Students Dr. Peter Yu, as well as some\nparticipants of an earlier advanced training course in student affairs offered\nby the Macau Student Affairs Institute. They discussed how UM plans to help\nstudents acquire and improve soft skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the largest\ncomprehensive public university in Macao, UM takes it upon itself to fulfill\nits social responsibility in addition to nurturing outstanding graduates. This\nissue\u2019s article \u201cUM: Aiming For World-Class, Fulfilling Social Responsibility\u201d\nwill give readers a better understanding of the interactions and ties between\nUM and the community. \u201cScientific Research Enriches Life: <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal;\">i<\/i>INTERACT Eye Tracking System\u201d tells the story of how two UM\ngraduates of the Faculty of Science and Technology successfully developed a\nlow-cost, easy-to-use eye-tracking technology with the help of their teacher as\nwell as how they plan to benefit the community with this technology. Also worth\nreading are articles in the newly-launched \u201cFaculty Column\u201d, in which faculty\nmembers share their insightful views on a diverse range of issues. \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal;\">Umagazine\u201d<\/i> is a bi-annual publication of\nUM first launched in 2009.
