The\nUniversity of Macau (UM) today (23 Aug) held a convocation on the new campus to\nwelcome more than 2,000 undergraduates and postgraduates. This is the\nuniversity\u2019s first convocation held on the new campus.<\/p>

<\/p>

The\nconvocation opened with a chorus by the UM Choir. In his speech UM Rector Wei\nZhao noted that this year\u2019s new students were the first to attend UM\u2019s first\nconvocation held on the new campus, the first to study and live on the new\ncampus, and also the first to join UM after the eight residential colleges\nbecame operational. Rector Wei Zhao added that now that the eight residential\ncolleges have become operational, UM will be able to better implement its\n\u201c4-in-1\u201d model of education. He encouraged the students to achieve \u201c1, 2, and\n3\u201d during their time at UM, which is to be a good person, to find at least two\nmentors, and to make at least three good friends. He also expressed hope that\nthe students cherish their time at UM.<\/p>

<\/p>

Prof\nLap-chee Tsui, former president and vice-chancellor of the University of Hong\nKong, was invited to speak at the convocation. Prof Tsui noted that UM\u2019s\nrelocation to the new campus was an unprecedented undertaking, and in the\nprocess the university had to solve many problems; but to everyone\u2019s\nsatisfaction, the relocation was finally complete. Prof Tsui used this example\nto encourage students to develop the ability to solve problems independently.\nHe also encouraged students to seize the precious opportunity to study\ndiligently, and to develop independent thinking, so they can help to create a\nbetter world in the future.<\/p>

<\/p>

After\nthe convocation was over, the rector, the deans and academic staff from the\nvarious faculties held a tea gathering with the students. A new student\ncommented that UM is different from universities in mainland China in that UM\nis more international, and she felt very excited to be one of the first\nstudents to attend the convocation on the new campus. Another student found\nRector Wei Zhao\u2019s speech very inspiring and said he would remember the five\nvirtues listed in the University Motto\u2014\u201cHumanity, Integrity, Propriety, Wisdom\nand Sincerity\u201d.<\/p>

<\/p>

The\nnew academic year will start on 25 August. To help new students adapt to the\nnew environment, the residential colleges, faculties, and student organisations\nhave organised a series of activities, including information seminars and\nguided campus tours, since mid-August. UM has also organised an information\nseminar for the students\u2019 parents to help them know more about UM\u2019s education\nphilosophy and latest developments, so they can better support their children\nas they are trying to adapt to their new role as a university student. <\/p>
