In his welcome speech, Rector Wei Zhao noted that Mr Wynn has been a\nlong-time supporter of higher education development in Macao in general, and at\nUM in particular. Wei Zhao mentioned that during yesterday\u2019s (22 September)\nmeeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chief Executive Chui Sai On\nreiterated the SAR government\u2019s commitment to support UM\u2019s goal to become a\nfirst-class university. Wei Zhao said that with the unprecedented support from\nthe SAR government, the public, and prominent community members like Mr Wynn,\nUM is confident to achieve that goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nhis talk, Mr Wynn said, \u201cProgress in Macau and\nprogress in the world is always about people and how they see themselves. The\nthings that make a business like mine successful, that make governments\nsuccessful, universities successful is that they have a wonderful sameness, a\ncommonality to them. What really matters, are the people. In my business, I am\nfond of saying \u2018Only people make people happy\u2019.\u201d During the Q&A sessions,\nmany people seized the opportunity to ask Mr Wynn questions. \n\n<\/p>

Mr Wynn is widely credited with having transformed Las Vegas into a\nworld-renowned resort and convention destination. He envisioned and built The\nMirage, Treasure Island and the Bellagio. These are boldly conceived resorts\nthat have set progressively higher standards for quality, luxury and\nentertainment. Now, as chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts, Limited, he has\ndeveloped Wynn Las Vegas, Wynn Macau, Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, and Encore at\nWynn Macau. Currently in the pipeline is a USD 4 billion luxurious integrated\nresort known as Wynn Palace on Cotai. Wynn Palace is scheduled to open in the\nfirst half of 2016.\nThe Wynn Everett resort development in Boston has also just been approved. Time <\/i>magazine has recognized Mr Wynn as\none of the \u201cWorld\u2019s 100 Most Influential People\u201d in 2006. In October 2014, Harvard Business Review<\/i> will name Mr\nWynn as one of the Best-Performing CEOs in the World. Under Mr Wynn\u2019s\nleadership, Wynn Resorts, Limited, has been honored by Fortune<\/i>\nmagazine as one of the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Admired Companies\u201d for six consecutive\nyears.<\/p>
