{"id":194909,"date":"2014-11-20T18:25:50","date_gmt":"2014-11-20T10:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/sem-categoria\/2014\/11\/30470-pt_pt\/"},"modified":"2014-11-20T18:25:50","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T10:25:50","slug":"30470","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/30470\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel laureate Robert Engle to speak on \u201cProspects for Global Financial Stability\u201dat UM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prof Robert F Engle, a world-renowned\neconomist and the 2003 Nobel laureate in economics, will speak on the\n\u201cProspects for Global Financial Stability\u201d at the Nobel Laureate Lecture\nco-organised by the University of Macau\u2019s (UM) Faculty of Business Administration\nand Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management. In the lecture to be held\non 25 November, Prof Engle will share his views on global financial stability.\nHe will also discuss a method to estimate how much capital a\nfinancial firm would need to raise if another financial crisis were to occur. <\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Engle\nwas awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics for his research on the concept\nof autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH). He developed this\nmethod for statistical modelling of time-varying volatility and demonstrated\nthat these techniques accurately capture the properties of many time series.\nHis ARCH model and its generalisations have become indispensable tools not only\nfor researchers, but also for analysts of financial markets.<\/p>\n\n<p>After\nreceiving his PhD degree in economics from Cornell University in 1969, he began\nteaching at the Department of Economics at MIT. Later, in 1978, he joined the\nUniversity of California, San Diego, where he taught until retiring in 2003.\nCurrently he is a Michael Armellino Professor of Management and Financial\nServices at New York University Stern School of Business.<\/p>\n\n<p>The\nlecture will be held on Tuesday 25 November in Room G078, Anthony Lau Building\n(E4), UM. It will begin at 3:00pm and be conducted in English, with\nsimultaneous interpretation into Putonghua. Live broadcast will also be\navailable in Room G062. All are welcome.
