To keep\npace with the evolving needs of society, the University of Macau (UM) has been\nconstantly improving its curriculum in order to provide a greater variety of\nchoices for the students. Also, to support the SAR government\u2019s higher education policy, UM has been\nconstantly seeking international academic accreditation. For example, three\nbachelor\u2019s degree programmes offered by UM\u2019s Faculty of Science and Technology\nhave been recognised by Washington Accord signatories\n(including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Russia, etc).\nThree bachelor\u2019s degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Business\nAdministration have also gained international accreditation.\nOther faculties at UM are also developing plans to seek accreditation from independent international academic institutions.\nUM expects to see more academic programmes gain international accreditation in\nthe future.<\/b><\/p>

Recognition is a different\nconcept. Recognition usually refers to approval by a government. For example, the reason that the new five-year Bachelor\nof Law programme (conducted in Chinese and Portuguese) launched after the\nhandover of Macao and the Bachelor of Law programmes in Chinese and Portuguese\nthat have been reformed after the handover are not automatically recognised by\nthe Portuguese government is as follows: the programmes launched by UM before\nthe handover of Macao were recognised automatically through publication on Portugal\u2019s Official Gazette\n(Di\u00e1rio da Rep\u00fablica) by the Portuguese government, after an academic process\nwas completed for each programme involving UM, the Macao government, the Ministry of Education in Portugal, and the Council\nof Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP). As Macao is no longer a territory\nunder Portuguese administration, programmes launched or revised by UM after the handover will not be published on Portugal\u2019s Official Gazette and recognised\nby the Portuguese government automatically. Like the other faculties at UM, the\nFaculty of Law is developing a plan to seek accreditation from independent\ninternational academic institutions. All law\nschools in the world, including those in\nPortugal, have been improving the syllabus of their law programmes to meet the\nneeds of society. The purpose\nof the curriculum reform in UM\u2019s Faculty of Law is to produce high-quality\nbilingual graduates who are proficient in Chinese and Portuguese to meet the\nneeds of the Macao society. <\/p>
