The University of Macau (UM) today held\nan Open Day on the new campus, attracting more than 8,000 people. This is UM\u2019s first Open Day held on the new campus. Many\nmiddle school students and their parents visited the various faculties and\nresidential colleges, where they got a taste of UM students\u2019 campus lives and\ninquired after courses that interested them. Some people came with their\nfamilies to sample food from around the world at the International Food\nFestival and watched student performances. <\/p>
\u2018For those who are interested to apply\nto UM after graduation, the Open Day provides a great opportunity for them to\nknow more about the campus and the university,\u2019 said a teacher from Pui Ching\nMiddle School who is also an alumna of UM. \u2018I\u2019m so happy for UM\u2019s progress in\nrecent years. The bigger campus and the advanced facilities will no doubt\nbenefit future students and will help to foster a greater sense of belonging\namong the students.\u2019<\/p>
Many people came with their families.\n\u2018We love the serene atmosphere of the campus,\u2019 exclaimed a couple attending the\nOpen Day. \u2018Just looking at the green lake quiets our mind and makes us feel\npeaceful. We often come here for bicycling, to breathe the fresh air. This is\nthe kind of environment that is conducive to learning, and I hope my children will\nbe able to study at UM in the future.\u2019 Another visitor in the Student Activity\nCentre was impressed by the international mix in the student body. \u2018UM has\nattracted students from around the world, and it\u2019s nice to experience different\ncultures on the campus. It makes the campus more vibrant,\u2019 she said.<\/p>
The opening\nceremony was held at 11:00 in the morning. Officiating guests at the ceremony\nincluded Lam Kam Seng, chair of UM\u2019s University Council; Wei Zhao, rector of\nUM; Ao Peng Kong, president of the General Assembly of UM Alumni Association;\nKiang Hao Chi, director general of UM Students\u2019 Union; and Evenlyn Yuan, vice\npresident of UM Postgraduate Association.<\/p>
In his speech at the opening ceremony,\nRector Wei Zhao noted that UM is a university of and for Macao, and that it is\nopen to the public every day. He said that UM hoped to take the Open Day as an\nopportunity to let people from Macao and the neighbouring regions, including\nrepresentatives from the education sector, to learn more about the campus and\nUM\u2019s educational philosophy. He also mentioned that UM received a large number\nof applications from outstanding local students this year. Of the 329 students\naccepted through the Principals\u2019 Recommended Admission programme, 39 rank No 1\nin their classes or schools, which Rector Zhao believes is an indication of their\nrecognition of UM\u2019s educational philosophy.<\/p>
After the opening ceremony, a group of\nguests attended the opening ceremony for the Creative Media Lab in the Faculty\nof Social Sciences, visited the Gaming Laboratory and Trading Room in the\nFaculty of Business Administration, and sampled food at the International Food\nFestival in the Student Activity Centre, in the company of UM faculty and\nstaff.<\/p>
In an attempt to showcase academic\nprogrammes and students\u2019 campus lives, UM\u2019s various faculties and residential\ncolleges prepared a lot of fun filled activities for the Open Day, including\nthe Blackbox Theatre, stone rubbing, food sampling in the campus dining\nfacilities, Card Production Workshop, lecture on whether cancer is curable, and\nmoot court demonstration, to name but a few. There were also exhibitions, booth\ngames, and student performances. To help the public know more about the campus,\nUM designed numerous touring routes and options, including campus tours guided\nby its PR Student Ambassadors.<\/p>
