A\nresearch team from the University of Macau (UM) recently received the Best Paper\nAward at the European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC) 2015 held in\nGraz, Austria. The ESSCIRC is considered \u2018Europe\u2019s \u201cChip Olympics\u201d\u2019. This\nyear\u2019s conference attracted 200 high-quality papers from around the world. The\nUM team is comprised of assistant professor Zhu Yan and PhD student Chan Chi\nHang from the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI; Prof U Seng\nPan from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of\nScience and Technology; and Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins.<\/p>
\nThe research project covered in the award-winning paper, titled \u201811-bit 900MS\/s\nTime-Interleaved Subranging Pipelined-SAR ADC\u2019, proposes three key innovations,\nin ADC architecture, sampling front-end, and digital calibration techniques, which\ncan help ADC achieve excellent energy efficiency, linearity, and accuracy even\nat an extremely high speed.
Prof\nU Seng Pan says that UM\u2019s microelectronics team has gained increasing\ninternational recognition for its achievements in chip design, and is\ninfluential in different fields, particularly in the field of ADC with low\npower consumption and high performance. UM is now ranked No 2 in the world in\nterms of the number of papers published in journals and at conferences which\nare the most renowned in the field of integrated circuits and which only accept\nresults with successful measurements from fabricated silicon chips.<\/p>
Dr\nZhu Yan has been involved in research in ADC with high speed and low power\nconsumption and digital calibration for many years. She has published ten\njournal papers and 26 conference papers, and holds four US patents. Zhu says\nthat the award is a result of the challenging yet farsighted research goals set\nby the supervisor, the joint effort of all team members, and, more importantly,\nthe support of UM and the\nScience and Technology Development Fund, which allowed the team to work in a first-class\nresearch environment.<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>
Launched\nin 1974, the ESSCIRC is one of the most influential conferences in the field of\nelectrical and electronic engineering. It is considered \u2018Europe\u2019s Chip\nOlympics\u2019. This year\u2019s conference attracted experts and scholars from around\nthe world.<\/p>
