The\n2015 UNCITRAL Emergence Conference on \u2018Harmonising\nTrade law to Enable Private Sector Regional Development\u2019 was held at UM today (30\nNovember). This is the second joint conference of the University of Macau (UM)\nand the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).<\/p>
Legal experts from around the world attended the conference\nto discuss the harmonisation of trade law, the regional development of the\nprivate sector, the latest trends in the unification and harmonisation of\ncontemporary commercial laws, and the implications for regional business\nenvironment. Representatives from the UNCITRAL\u2019s Regional Centre for Asia and\nthe Pacific, the Macao SAR government, the Macau Lawyers Association, and UM\naddressed the conference.<\/p>
Prof Haydn Chen, UM\u2019s vice rector for student affairs, said\nat the conference that the transmission of knowledge (teaching) and the\ncreation of knowledge (research and scholarly work) are inseparable functions\nof academics in a university setting; therefore, UM has actively developed\ncooperative research with major research institutions around the world. He\nadded that the Faculty of Law (FLL) at UM has established close cooperation\nwith other law schools around the world, including those in the European Union\nand Portuguese-speaking countries. He hopes\nthe FLL and the other faculties at UM will continue to leverage their strengths\nto promote collaboration between UM and international organisations in various areas.\nTrade Development Through Harmonization\nof Commercial Law<\/i>, co-authored by Prof Muruga Perumal Ramaswamy from UM and\nJoao Ribeiro, head of the UNCITRAL\u2019s Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific,\nwas launched at the conference.<\/p>
Joao Ribeiro delivered a keynote speech, in which he\ndiscussed the importance of the recently adopted 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable\nDevelopment (the Sustainable Development Goals), and the important role of the UNCITRAL\nin the Asia Pacific region.<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>
Legal experts from around the world, including Japan, South\nKorea, Australia, Singapore, Canada, Mozambique, India, Sweden, the United\nStates, mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, as well as scholars from\nthe University of Western Australia, the University of Canberra, Villanova\nUniversity, the University of Melbourne, the University of Hong Kong, Eduardo\nMondlane University, Kobe University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and\nSouth Asian University attended the conference and had in-depth discussions on\na wide range of topics, including international contract law, the future of\ninternational commercial dispute resolution, e-commerce law, cross-border\ninsolvency, and MSMEs. The proceedings of the conference will be published later. <\/p>
