The University of Macau (UM) recently\nheld a public lecture titled \u2018Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Prizes: How Nobel\nLaureates Are Selected?\u2019 The lecture was presented by Prof Lars Brink, former chairman\nof the Nobel Committee for Physics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.<\/p>
In his welcome remarks, UM\nRector Wei Zhao said that UM is committed to fostering a good intellectual\nambience at UM and in Macao, because such an ambience will play a critical role\nin teaching the next generation to think in a scientific manner. Rector Zhao\nstressed the importance of scientific thinking, saying that it will help people\nmake better decisions in every aspect of life. He added that UM hopes to train its\nstudents to become professionals not only in sciences, but also in various other\nfields.<\/p>
In his lecture, Prof Brink talked\nabout Alfred Nobel and his founding of the Nobel Prizes, as well as the\nstatutes behind them. He told the audience how every year, the Nobel Committees\nwill invite thousands of experts and scholars from different countries and\ninstitutions to nominate candidates for the next year\u2019s Nobel Prizes. Citing\nthe Nobel Prize in physics as an example, he explained the nomination and\nselection process for the Nobel Prizes as well as how Alfred Nobel\u2019s wish was\nimplemented. It is worth noting that during his visit, Prof Brink also\npresented to an enthusiastic crowd another talk titled \u2018The Standard Model of\nParticle Physics Is Complete\u2019, in which he illustrated the necessary\nunderstanding of the physics by the committee which resulted in the 2013 Nobel\nPrize in physics for the discovery of the Higgs Boson.<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf Brink is currently a distinguished professor at the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. He\nis also a member of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert\nEinstein Institute) in Potsdam, Germany. He has worked at CERN and the\nCalifornia Institute of Technology, and has been a visiting scientist at the\nInstitute for Advanced Study, Princeton; the Kavli Institute for Theoretical\nPhysics in Santa Barbara; and many other institutions around the world. <\/p>
