Yang Shanshan, a PhD student\nof linguistics from the Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Humanities,\nUniversity of Macau (UM), recently won the championship as leader of a team\nfrom Hong Kong and Macao in the group category of consecutive interpreting at\nthe national final of the Fifth All China Interpreting Contest. She also\nreceived an Excellence Award and was voted the \u2018Favourite Interpreter\u2019. Another\nstudent from the department, namely Zhang Xiaoping, who is a master\u2019s student\nof translation studies, won a second prize in the simultaneous interpreting\ninvitational tournament of the competition. Their instructor Dr Victoria Lei\nreceived a Distinguished Teacher Award.<\/p>
Organised by the Translators\nAssociation of China, the All China Interpreting Contest is considered the most\nprestigious, influential, and industry-known interpreting competition in China.\nThis year, a total of 1,814 contestants from 439 universities in China\nparticipated in the competition. The qualifying rounds started in December last\nyear to select outstanding interpreters in eight regions of China. The national\nfinal was held at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing.<\/p>
In the face of strong\nopponents from leading universities who have made it to the national final in Beijing\nthrough preliminaries, provincial contests, and regional contests, Zhang\nXiaoping demonstrated an excellent command of both English and Chinese,\noutstanding skills in simultaneous interpreting, and a strong mind in the\ncompetition and won a second prize in the simultaneous interpreting invitational\ntournament. In the group category of consecutive interpreting, Yang Shanshan\nreceived the highest score in the \u2018sodoku\u2019 interpreting round. With solid\ninterpreting and leadership skills and adaptability, she won the championship\ntogether with the two other contestants in her team, one\nfrom the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the other from the Macao\nPolytechnic Institute.<\/p>
Anita Chao Kit I, a master\u2019s student of translation studies from the\nDepartment of English, joined the UM team as an observer. The UM students\u2019 trip\nto Beijing was sponsored by the Macao Foundation.<\/p>
