The 2016\nUNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law) Emergence\nConference on \u2018Regional Perspectives on Contemporary and Future Harmonization\nAgenda in International Trade Law\u2019, co-organised by the University of Macau\n(UM) and the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and\nthe Pacific, was\nheld\ntoday (13 December) at the World Trade Center Macau. During the conference, experts\nand scholars from Australia, Finland, Germany, Sweden, Japan, India, Singapore,\nMalaysia, Russia, the United States, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao\ndiscussed contemporary international\nlegal issues arising out of various UNCITRAL texts and related harmonisation of\nlaw.\n<\/p>
During the conference, UM Rector Wei Zhao stressed\nthe importance of the conference in fostering the role of teaching and research\nin the promotion of international trade law in the region, as well as the\nimportance of cooperation between UM and\ninternational organisations like UNCITRAL in the creation and inculcation of\nknowledge. He also discussed the important role UM\u2019s Faculty\nof Law plays in fostering teaching and research in pertinent areas of\ninternational trade and commercial law. Joao Ribeiro, head of the UNCITRAL\nRegional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, delivered a keynote speech titled \u2018Modernizing\nInternational Trade Law to Support Innovation and Sustainable Development\u2019. Ribeiro\nhighlighted the strategic opportunity to Macao to establish itself as a hub of\nlegal services and knowledge sharing in the field of international trade law, especially\nin the context of the Portuguese speaking jurisdictions. <\/p>
The two-day conference will cover\nmany topics, including \u2018Development of the Digital Economy: New Ways of Doing\nBusiness Domestically and Cross-Border\u2019, \u2018Enhancing Global Supply Chains by\nReducing Legal Obstacles\u2019, \u2018Contemporary and Emerging Issues Related to Finance\nand Investment\u2019, \u2018Emerging Legal Issues in the Commercial Exploitation of Deep\nSeabed, Space and Artificial Intelligence\u2019, and \u2018Rule of Law and Access to\nJustice in the Context of Climate Change, Finance and Investment\u2019.<\/p>
The\nopening session was also attended by Chui Sai Cheong, president of the World\nTrade Center Macau Arbitration Center; Ung Chi Keong, head of the Department of\nLegal Translation, Legal Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR Government; Jorge Neto\nValente, president of the Macau Lawyers Association; and Tong Io Cheng, interim\ndean of the UM\u2019s Faculty of Law.<\/p>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis\nis the third consecutive year that UM and the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific have co-organised the annual\nconference.\nThis year\u2019s event also receives support from the World Trade Center Macau, the\nInternational Chamber of Commerce – International Court of Arbitration Asia,\nand the Asian Business Law Institute. The conference is a unique event leading\nup to the UNCITRAL Congress on \u2018Modernising International Trade Law to Support\nInnovation and Sustainable Development\u2019, which will be held in Vienna in July\n2017.<\/p>
