With an\nintense look of curiosity and concentration, they watched the PPT presentation\nprojected on the classroom wall and repeated the pronunciations of the English\nletters after their teacher thousands of miles away. This special English class\nwas organised and designed by faculty members and students from Lui Che Woo\nCollege.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"font-family: &quot;;;times new roman&quot;, times, seriffont-size: small;\">Giving Disadvantaged Children\na Chance to Receive Education<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>The children who received the long-distance teaching were\nfrom a private primary school in Liangshan, Sichuan province. Because of the\nlack of resources and English teachers, the students have virtually zero\nknowledge of English. \u2018Just because they were born in a remote village, these\nchildren are robbed of the opportunity to receive normal education like\nchildren from other places. This is not right, and makes me want to do\nsomething to help them,\u2019 says Fu Jia, a third-year student from the Department\nof Finance and Business Economics and one of the volunteer teachers. Fu\nbelieves that devoting some personal time and energy to give disadvantaged\nchildren a chance to receive education is a worthy cause. \u2018I felt very excited\nthe first time I saw the children on the screen. They were very enthusiastic\nabout learning, and often asked questions without being prompted,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lei Ut Wa, a second-year English major from the Faculty of\nEducation, is another volunteer teacher. Lei would often play English movies\nand music in class in order to create a relaxed learning atmosphere and\nintroduce the students to English culture.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"font-family: &quot;;;times new roman&quot;, times, seriffont-size: small;\">Harder than Imagined<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>But long-distance teaching is not always smooth sailing.\nAccording to Lei, the unstable internet connection and the slow internet speed\noften resulted in a lag of one to two seconds between the sending and receiving\nof signals. This not only prevented real-time interaction in class, but also\ncaused each class to last longer than planned. During our interview, a class\nhad to be cancelled because of an internet failure. Student volunteers looked\nvery disappointed, as they worried this would slow down the schedule. But as\nChu Caixia, a resident fellow from Lui Che Woo College, puts it, problems like\nthis cannot be helped, because it is just one of the limitations of\nlong-distance teaching.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"font-family: &quot;;;times new roman&quot;, times, seriffont-size: small;\">Dare to Try,\nConstantly Improve <\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>During the last class of the last semester, our journalist\nvisited the classroom again to cover the session. After class, student\nvolunteers had a discussion: What real difference can such long-distance\nteaching make to the children in that village? How much can the students learn\nfrom long-distance teaching? They didn\u2019t reach any definitive answers. The only\nthing they all agreed upon was that there was still room for improvement. They\nplan to make a more workable schedule and develop more suitable teaching\nmaterials in the next semester. They will also visit the village in the summer\nholiday so they can spend some time with the local students and teachers to\nlearn about their needs and the problems they encountered in the learning\nprocess.
