At age 14, he was selected to enter the Macao\nTeam. He has represented Macao at various international competitions, including\nthe World University 3&#215;3 Basketball Championship held last year (where his team\nentered the quarter-final), the Asian University 3&#215;3 Basketball Championship\n(where his team was the first runner-up), and the Macao Inter -varsity\nBasketball Championship as a member of the UM Basketball Team (where they once\nagain won the championship). Because of his height and his passion for\nbasketball, this shy young man has been dubbed \u2018Macao\u2019s Yao Ming\u2019 in the media.<\/p><p><b>First Time Crying\nover a Victory <\/b><\/p><p>Lai is currently a fourth-year student from the Department\nof Management and Marketing. Forseeing that this year would be his final year\nat UM, he was especially diligent in his training for the Macao Inter-varsity\nBasketball Championship held at the end of last year. To prepare for the match,\nthe team increased their training times to four times a week. When training\nvenue was not available, they would get up very early and meet in the sports\ncomplex at seven. \u2018More people would come and they would be more punctual than\nusual,\u2019 he says. \u2018After the training, we would also run many laps around the\nbasketball court. It was very intensive, and we had never worked that hard.\u2019\nWhen they won the championship, Lai, overcome with excitement, hugged his\nteammates and cried.<\/p><p><b>Goal: Playing at CUBA\nNational <\/b><\/p><p>Winning the championship qualified the UM team for the CUBA\nleague to be held later this year. This will be Lai\u2019s fourth appearance at the\nCUBA league, and he has high hopes for his team. \u2018I hope we can enter the top\nsix in the southwest region and qualify for the national competition,\u2019 he says.\n\u2018This year, the average height of our team is comparable to those of other\nteams, and we have the added advantage of being fast, so this year is the best\nyear for us.\u2019 Asked about the disadvantages, he says: \u2018Athletes from our rival\nteams were all admitted to their universities because of their athletic\ntalents, and they receive professional training every day, while we only train\nthree times a week. To prepare for CUBA, I could take up to five times of\ntraining a week, but that\u2019s the limit, because after all we have classes to\nattend. \u2019<\/p><p><b>Electric\nHeight-adjustable Basketball Hoop <\/b><\/p><p>Playing basketball on the old campus was an unforgettable\nexperience for Lai. There weren\u2019t many practice venues on the old campus, so\nthey usually had to wait for the women\u2019s team to finish. They only had two\nhours to practice. When the time was up, the basketball hoop automatically went\nup and the lights automatically went off. So even if they wanted to practise a\nfew more shots they couldn\u2019t. \u2018We often had to pack up our stuff in the dark,\nwhich was both annoying and funny,\u2019 he says with a wry smile.<\/p><p>\u2018Now things are much better on the new campus. We have our\nown practice venue. On the weekends, we can also invite our friends to play on\nthe outdoor courts.\u2019<\/p><p><b>Best Buddies <\/b><\/p><p>After moving to the new campus in his second year, Lai and\nhis teammate Lam Teng Long became roommates in Lui Che Woo College, and later,\nbest buddies. \u2018We shared the same room, practiced basketball together, played\nat competitions together, sometimes even went to classes together,\u2019 he says.\nThe rapport they built in daily life extends to the basketball court. \u2018We are\nvery in sync when playing basketball. We can understand each other\u2019s thoughts\nwithout verbal communication. And we will also help each other out.\u2019 The upcoming\ngraduation saddens Lai because it will mean less opportunities to play\nbasketball with his favourite buddy. \u2018I will spend the first year after\ngraduation mostly in Hong Kong as a semi-professional player. I will miss our\ntimes together, but I also know we will both work hard,\u2019 he says.<\/p><p>The Men\u2019s Basketball Team has a great vibe; it doesn\u2019t take\nlong for a new member to feel a sense of belonging. Lai cites his partner post\nplayer as an example. \u2018He is just a freshman, but he plays very well. What I like\nthe most about him is his willingness to work hard. I often see him training\neven during non-training hours,\u2019 he says. As a senior member, Lai often reminds\nnew members to work extra hard to earn the opportunity to play at competitions\ninstead of complaining about the coach not giving them any chance.<\/p><p><b>\u2018My hero\nis definitely Yao Ming.\u2019<\/b><\/p><p>\u2019My biggest hero is definitely Yao Ming, because everyone\ncalls me \u201cMacao\u2019s Yao Ming\u201d,\u2019 he says. \u2018I try to imitate him and learn from\nhim,\u2019 Lai says the best local basketball players can still be in their prime in\ntheir 30s. \u2018I will always love basketball, and I will keep playing it\nuntil at least 35,\u2019 he says.<\/p><p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: My UMAt a height of 1.93 metres, Lai Ka Tong was already a rising basketball star in middle school.
