In China, New Year is a holiday many people, especially\nyoung children, look forward to, because it is a time when they can put on new\nclothes and spend some quality time with relatives and friends they haven\u2019t\nseen for a long time. But in today\u2019s fast-paced world, has New Year celebration\nlost its meaning and become just another yawn-inspiring cookie-cutter practice everywhere?\nOr do people in different countries celebrate the holiday differently? To find\nout, we interviewed several UM students about the interesting New Year\ntraditions in their home countries. Check it out!<\/p>\n\n

Enjoy New Year Dinner\nwith Friends<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Evelin Rizzo, an exchange student of the Faculty of Social\nSciences, is from Andrano, a small friendly town in southeast Italy with a\npopulation of less than 5,000. In Italy, the New Year Eve is called \u2018La festa\ndi San Silvestro\u2019, which means \u2018The Feast of San Silvestro\u2019, while the New\nYear\u2019s Day is called \u2018Capodanno\u2019. As with many other holidays in Italy, food is\nan important part of the New Year celebration.<\/p>\n\n

On the New Year Eve, Rizzo would usually prepare an\nelaborate dinner with several good friends. Lentils, which are considered to\nbring good luck in the coming year, and sausages, believed to be a harbinger of\nprosperity, are a staple of the New Year Eve dinner. After dinner, they would\ngo out to watch the spectacular Fireworks Dance and musical performances on the\nstreet. When the countdown starts, people open champagnes to drink with their\nfriends. On Capodanno, Rizzo would share another lavish lunch with new friends.\nWhat about her family? \u2018We already celebrated it on Christmas,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n

Jump High for Growth,\nEat Noodles for Long Life <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Lisandra Bautista from the Department of Government and\nPublic Administration was born in Macao, but she always observes the New Year\ntraditions of her home country\u2014the Philippines. Before studying at UM, Bautista\nlived in the city of Naga. There are many interesting New Year customs in the\nPhilippines. For example, when the clock strikes midnight, children will jump\nas high as they can because they believe this will make them grow taller.<\/p>\n\n

Although the Philippines is a predominantly Christian\ncountry, many families celebrate the Lunar New Year like Chinese people. For\nexample, people keep all the doors, windows, drawers, and cupboards open when\nthe clock strikes midnight, because doing so is considered to bring good luck\nin the coming year. Another interesting New Year custom followed in the\nPhilippines is wearing polka-dots dress as round shapes signify prosperity.<\/p>\n\n

Traditional New Year dishes in the Philippines include\npancit bihon and pancit canton, two favorite noodle dishes served for long\nlife, as well as the sticky rice, which symbolises the stickiness, or unity, of\nthe family. Bautista normally celebrates the New Year at home, because there is\na mouthwatering tradition in her family that has nothing to do with food. \u2018My\nmom would throw money around the house and let me and my younger sister pick up\nthe money,\u2019 she says. \u2018We would race to see who could pick up more money. And\nthe money would become our lai see<\/i>.\nThis tradition has become a form of entertainment in my family.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

New Year Eve\u2019s\nBell-Ringing and Osechi-ryori<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Kento Nakashige, an exchange student from the Faculty of\nBusiness Administration, is from Osaka, Japan. On the New Year Eve, Nakashige\nwould have the reunion dinner with his family and watch the Red and White Song\nContest. When it approaches midnight, Japanese people, especially the elder\ngeneration, usually visit the nearest temples or shrines, which organise\ndifferent kinds of activities. The whole Osaka turns into a sleepless city. The\ntemples and shrines are swarming with people trying to obtain O-mikuji, a\nfortune-telling paper strip.<\/p>\n\n

At midnight, Buddhist temples all over Japan will ring their\nbells a total of 108 times, which symbolise the 108 earthly desires that bring\nhumans much suffering. Ringing the bells 108 times at the end of a year\nsymoblises the embrace of a new year. This is also one of the most important\nNew Year traditions in Japan.<\/p>\n\n

On the New Year\u2019s Day, Kento would visit his grandparents\nand relatives with his parents. Together they would enjoy a holiday feast,\nwhich would usually include sukiyaki, rice cakes, hot pot, and Osechi-ryori.\nOsechi-ryori is a set of small, traditional dishes served in beautiful four\n(symbolic of the four seasons) or five-layered lacquer bento boxes called\n\u2018jubako\u2019. Each layer has a different meaning. The dishes in the boxes must be\nfinished, as leaving any food unfinished or throwing it away is considered to\nthrow away good fortune.<\/p>\n\n

Japanese people have the custom of sending New Year\u2019s Day\npostcards to their friends and relatives. The postcards usually feature one of the\n12 animal signs in the Chinese zodiac system. But it is a taboo to send New\nYear\u2019s Day postcards to people in mourning.<\/p>\n\n

Morna, Cape Verde\u2019s\nNational Music <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Rodrigo Costa of the Faculty of Science and Technology is\nfrom Cape Verde, a Portuguese-speaking country off the west coast of Africa.\nAccording to Costa, both Christmas and New Year are major holidays in Cape\nVerde, during which time people go to the church to attend masses. Young people\nusually attend big music parties with their friends where they listen to morna,\nthe national music of Cape Verde. At the New Year\u2019s Eve party, people form into\ncircles with those around them, regardless of whether they know each other or\nnot. And together, they dance to the beat of the music, smiling and laughing as\nthey welcome the advent of a new year.<\/p>\n\n

Dumplings, New Year\u2019s\nGala, and Snow Play <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Yang Yulin of the Department of Civil and Environmental\nEngineering is from Liaoning province in northeast China. He says people from\nhis hometown are not particularly keen on holidays, with the only exception of\nthe Chinese New Year. On the eve of the Chinese New Year, his family and all\nthe relatives would visit his grandmother\u2019s house where they would make\ndumplings, have dinner, play poker, and watch the New Year\u2019s Gala on CCTV. When\nadults were preparing the dinner, children would go out to play with snow. The\nnext day, everyone in the family would get up bright and early to pay New\nYear\u2019s visits to his grandmother and the other relatives, which is an important\nNew Year tradition in China. Another important tradition is saying auspicious\nphrases whenever you meet someone during the holiday.<\/p>
