The Galleries: Sources, Voices and Histories<\/i>, a permanent\nexhibition in the Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, University\nof Macau (UM), is an initiative encouraged by the Subcommittee on Education and\nResearch, UNESCO Memory of the World Programme. The exhibition was designed and\ncoordinated by Beatriz Puente-Ballesteros, assistant professor of the\nDepartment of History and corresponding member of the UNESCO Subcommittee on\nEducation and Research.<\/p>
The galleries introduce students\nto UM\u2019s history research, presenting the histories of China during different\ntime periods, with a special focus on East-West interactions, particularly those\nin the areas of Macau studies, the maritime history in the Age of Sail, the history\nof science, technology, medicine, maps and arts, and the histories of South Asia\nand Southeast Asia. The galleries also display over 300 reproductions of images\nfrom archives and libraries all over the world, with information about the historical\nsources, including manuscripts of letters, archival documents, printed records,\nmaps, drawings, illustrations, portraits, photographs, and posters.<\/p>
The spatial arrangement of the\ngalleries was inspired by the Renaissance concept of Kunstkammern<\/i>, which literally means \u2018art rooms\u2019, but is more\ncommonly known as \u2018cabinets of curiosities\u2019 or \u2018wonder-rooms\u2019. Its visual\narchitecture, reminiscent of a museum, invites visitors to stroll freely and offers\nthem an interactive experience that sometimes makes them lose awareness of time\nand space.<\/p>
The various themes covered in\nthe galleries are arranged in chronological order: \u2018In the Origins of Chinese\nHistoriography\u2019 and \u2018Searching for the Northern Wei Dynasty\u2019 by Li Ping, \u2018Buddhist\nArt and Popular Culture\u2019 by Zhu Tianshu, \u2018East-West Interactions in a Maritime\nStage\u2019 and \u2018The Jesuit Mission in the Imperial Court\u2019 by Ant\u00f3nio Vasconcelos de\nSaldanha, \u2018Western Medicine for the Naked Emperor\u2019 by Beatriz\nPuente-Ballesteros, \u2018Mapping the Qing Imperial Space\u2019 by Mario Cams, \u2018Macau: A\nCrossroad between East and West\u2019 by Tang Kaijian, \u2018Teahouses\u2019 and \u2018the Gown\nBrothers Secret Society\u2019 by Wang Di, \u2018The Collapse of the Heavenly Dynasty\u2019 and\n\u2018the Construction of Modern China\u2019 by Mao Haijian, and \u2018War Strategy and US\nStrategy for Asia\u2019 by George C Wei. By presenting historical knowledge in an\nesthetically appealing manner, these individual exhibits aim to demonstrate\nthat civilisations and cultures are not discrete and unalterable units, but\nhave been subjected time and again to external influences and impacts. Elucidating\nthese developments and encounters will hopefully deepen one\u2019s understanding of\nwhat defines modernity in China and in other regions of the world.<\/p>
The galleries also involve the\ncontributions of UM students. \u2018The History Students\u2019 Space\u2019 is designed in such\na way as to inspire the students and to motivate them to share their own\nprojects with the university community.<\/p>

The Subcommittee on Education\nand Research is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme. Its\ninitiatives are aimed at promoting the use of firsthand material (voices of\nhistory) for teaching and research purposes in academic institutions. By this\npermanent exhibition, the subcommittee has encouraged and supported a proposal\nof its Corresponding Member Beatriz Puente-Ballesteros who is based at UM.<\/p>
