Following the degree conferment\nceremony, Prof Wieman will give a Doctor&nbsp;<i>honoris causa<\/i>&nbsp;Lecture\ntitled \u2018Taking a Scientific Approach to Science Education\u2019. He will share his\nviews on science education and discuss ways to increase students\u2019 scientific\nknowledge.<\/p><p>Prof\nWieman received the Nobel Prize in physics in 2001. He is a renowned physicist in\nthe United States and an educator at Stanford University. In addition to\nscience, Prof Wieman is also dedicated to the promotion of \u2018peer instruction\u2019. Peer\ninstruction means students assist teachers in the classroom and work to teach\neach other, especially to those who need more teaching assistance. Prof Wieman\nhas published many monographs and more than 200 scientific research papers in\nphysics and science education. His publications, particularly those on students\u2019\nbeliefs in physics and problem-solving skills, have been instrumental in promoting\nthe development of evidence-based science education.<\/p><p>The\nceremony and the lecture will start at 4:00pm in the auditorium of the UM Wu\nYee Sun Library (E2-G012). The lecture will be conducted in English, with\nsimultaneous interpretation into Mandarin. During the event, experts and scholars from the\nUnited States, Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao will have an\nin-depth discussion on STEM Education. The event is jointly organised by UM\u2019s Centre\nfor Teaching and Learning Enhancement and Institute of Applied Physics and\nMaterials Engineering.
