Zhang Dejiang, chairman\nof the Standing Committee of the National People\u2019s Congress, today (10 May)\nvisited the University of Macau (UM). Zhang praised UM as \u2018very good\u2019 for its\ncampus and development. He said that UM\u2019s new campus, which covers\napproximately one square kilometre, is testament to the support of the central\ngovernment and the SAR government to higher education development in Macao.<\/p>
Accompanied by Macao\nChief Executive Chui Sai On, Zhang arrived at UM in the morning and was warmly\nreceived by Tam Chon Weng, secretary for social affairs and culture; Lam Kam\nSeng, chair of the UM University Council; and Wei Zhao, rector of UM. Lam told\nZhang about UM\u2019s campus design, master plan, educational philosophy, and\nachievements in scientific research. Lam said that UM\u2019s new campus has been\ndeveloped by the right people, at the right place, and at the right time,\nadding that with the support of the central government and the SAR government,\nUM has the right conditions and room to develop itself. He also said that thanks\nto the joint effort of all UM members, the university has made rapid progress and\nhas nurtured many patriotic professionals for China and Macao in recent years.<\/p>
Zhang used the term\n\u2018very good\u2019 to praise UM\u2019s campus and development. He said that the SAR\ngovernment has invested a lot of resources in UM so that the university could\ndevelop rapidly in recent years and become one of the top universities in China\nand the world. He said that UM\u2019s new campus, which covers approximately 1\nsquare kilometre, is testament to the support of the central government and the\nSAR government to higher education development in Macao. During the visit,\nZhang showed a strong interest in UM\u2019s residential college system and its\nlatest developments in the fields of Chinese medical sciences and\nmicroelectronics.<\/p>

He Zhaodong, director-general\nof the board of directors of the UM Students\u2019 Union (UMSU) and a student from\nthe Faculty of Business Administration, says that Zhang\u2019s visit is very\nencouraging to UM students because it shows how much he values education in\nMacao. Leong Keng Lon, president of the general assembly of the UMSU and a\nstudent from the Faculty of Science and Technology, says that it was a pleasure\nto receive Zhang at UM, adding that he is very grateful to the central\ngovernment for providing a piece of land covering 1 square kilometre for UM to\nestablish its new campus, which has provided a very good environment for\nstudents to study and live in.<\/p>
