The University of Macau today\n(27 May) held the Congregation 2017. UM this year graduated 1,400 students.\nChui Sai On, chief executive of Macao SAR and chancellor of UM, attended the\nceremony. Chui said at the ceremony that today\u2019s UM attaches importance to\nintroducing high-calibre talent and actively joins the international higher\neducation trend, adding that the university vigorously develops disciplines\nwith potential and spares no effort in curriculum development in order to\nimprove the quality of its education.<\/p>
Chui officiated at the\nceremony in the company of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Tam Chon\nWeng, UM University Council Chair Lam Kam Seng, UM Rector Wei Zhao, and Vice\nRectors Lionel Ni, Rui Martins, and Haydn Chen. Nearly 4,000 people attended\nthe ceremony, including members of the University Assembly, University Council,\nand Senate; government officials; prominent community members; parents of the\ngraduates; and UM faculty and staff.<\/p>
In his speech, Chui said that\nthe rapid development of UM serves as an important example of how higher\neducation development in Macao thrives under the \u2018One Country, Two Systems\u2019\npolicy. He added that today\u2019s UM not only attaches importance to introducing\nhigh-calibre talent, but also actively joins the international higher education\ntrend. The university vigorously develops disciplines with potential and spares\nno effort in curriculum development in order to improve the quality of its\neducation. Chui hopes that UM will make a greater contribution to higher\neducation development in Macao by exploring a reliable way of training\nhigher-level talent based on its successful experience. Chui believes that the\nnew higher education law will provide new momentum and advantage for higher\neducation development in Macao, and will present another important opportunity\nfor UM and other higher education institutions in Macao. He hopes UM and other\ninstitutions will seize the opportunity and continue to improve their\n\u2018hardware\u2019 and \u2018software\u2019 aspects in order to train students to become the\npillars of society.<\/p>
In his speech, Rector Wei Zhao\nsaid that this year\u2019s graduates are very special, because they are the last\ncohort of UM graduates to have studied on both campuses. He added that UM\nadvocates \u2018know yourself\u2019 to motivate the students to learn to find out what\nthey want to do and what they can do so they can gradually build\nself-confidence and make a contribution to society. To achieve this goal, UM\nimplements a \u20184-in-1\u2019 education model, which has produced a positive effect on\nthe students: their academic performance, soft skills, and employability have\nall significantly improved. And UM alumni are also doing very well in different\nfields. Rector Zhao said that the success of the students and alumni is the\nsuccess of the university. He hopes that both the graduates and their alma\nmater will achieve greater success in the future.<\/p>
The representative of this\nyear\u2019s graduates recalled her four years of life at UM, saying that the biggest\nlessons she learned was the importance of humility. She said she would never\nforget her teachers because they showed her how \u2018Teaching is a work of heart\u2019,\nand as a teacher-to-be, she will keep the faith.<\/p>

This year, UM graduated more\nthan 1,400 students with a bachelor\u2019s degree. They are from the Faculty of Arts\nand Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education,\nFaculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and Technology,\nand Faculty of Social Sciences. 44 of the graduates have also completed\nprogrammes offered by the Honours College.<\/p>
