{"id":194109,"date":"2017-10-26T12:26:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T04:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/sem-categoria\/2017\/10\/43428-pt_pt\/"},"modified":"2017-10-26T12:26:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-26T04:26:00","slug":"43428","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/43428\/","title":{"rendered":"UM realiza workshop sobre educa\u00e7\u00e3o geral para discutir desafios e oportunidades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\nUniversity of Macau (UM) Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement (CTLE)\nrecently held a full-day workshop titled \u2018General Education: Challenges and\nOpportunities\u2019. The workshop attracted experts and scholars from different\nparts of the world. During the event, the participants shared ideas on how\ngeneral education at universities can help to broaden students\u2019 horizons and\nincrease their knowledge. Prof Lionel Ni, vice rector (academic affairs) of UM,\nsaid that general education can help students develop soft skills and adjust to\nthe fast-changing, increasingly globalised world in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\ncentury.<\/p><p>In his\nopening remarks, Prof Ni said that today&#8217;s world is more global,\nknowledge-based, and connected, faced with faster changes. Today&#8217;s graduates\nwill have several different careers, which are sometimes unrelated to the majors\nthey studied in college. So they need to respond creatively and seize\nopportunities in a rapidly changing economy by possessing an integrated system\nof knowledge and a diverse skill set. Prof Ni invited the audience to think\nabout a few frequently-asked GE-related questions: What does one want to\nachieve through GE? How can one relate GE to discipline-specific education? How\ncan one effectively run large-sized GE classes without losing track of the students\u2019\nlearning needs? Prof Ni went on to explain that education in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\ncentury is beyond discipline-specific training; it is about fostering students\u2019\ntransferable skills (otherwise known as \u2018soft skills\u2019), and preparing students\nfor the challenges in the rapidly-changing digital life, society, and markets.<\/p><p>Prof Katrine Wong,\ndirector of the CTLE, believes that keeping track of the students&#8217; learning\nneeds in a large-sized class is a challenging task. The strategies she has tried\nto this end include checking student understanding using Poll Everywhere (which\ngives her instant feedback), using hexagonal table setting if space permits so she\ncan walk around the classroom and interact with students more directly,\nincorporating peer instruction in her teaching, which requires the students to work\nin pairs where one student explains a certain concept to his or her partner, as\nwell as adopting creative assessment methods, such as giving one-question quizzes\nand assigning more low-stake tasks. Because such exercises are short and\nfocused on specific goals, they can be completed within a few minutes and allow\nher to assess the students&#8217; learning progress.<\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p>The workshop included\nvarious talks from distinguished scholars.
