{"id":19235,"date":"2020-07-06T16:42:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T15:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/50327-pt_pt\/"},"modified":"2020-07-06T16:42:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T15:42:00","slug":"50327","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/50327\/","title":{"rendered":"UM consegue novos desenvolvimentos na investiga\u00e7\u00e3o do comportamento in vivo de nanomedicamentos"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A research team led by Prof Zheng Ying in the Institute\nof Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) at the University of Macau (UM) has\ndiscovered the prolonged circulation and elimination mechanism of crosslinked\npolymeric micelles in zebrafish model, providing scientific support and\nguidance for the rational design and optimisation of injected nanomedicines. Their\nfinding can help researchers improve the efficacy of nanomedicines and reduce toxic\nand side effects. The study has been published in <i>Biomaterials<\/i>, a top international journal in the field.<\/p><p>In recent years, a myriad of nanoparticle carrier\nsystems (nanomedicines) has emerged, but few products have achieved successful\nclinical application. The main reason for this gap is the lack of understanding\nof the behaviour and biofate of nanomedicines in vivo. Because it is difficult\nfor light (visible light and fluorescent light) to penetrate thick tissues, the\nin vivo tracking of nanomedicines in rodents is severely limited by the\nrestricted imaging possibilities within these animals. To address this\nchallenge, the team used FRET (fluorescence or F\u00f6rster resonance energy\ntransfer) imaging in combination with a visual zebrafish larvae model (7 dpf)\nto realise in vivo quantification and visualisation of intact polymeric\nmicelles. Through this technique, they revealed the behaviour and elimination\nmechanism of polymeric micelles in vivo at both whole organism level and cellular\nmolecular level.<\/p><p>The study found that endothelial cell scavenger receptors\nplay a major role in mediating the capture of micelle nanoparticles in the\nzebrafish\u2019s caudal vein and liver. After dissociation in vivo, the polymer\nmicelles are quickly eliminated through the hepatobiliary pathway and excreted\nto the gastrointestinal tract, while it is difficult to eliminate the intact\npolymer micelles out of the body. The study can help researchers understand the\ndelivery of nanomedicines in vivo and optimise the drug delivery system,\nthereby improving drug efficacy and reducing toxic and side effects.<\/p><p><a name=\"_Hlk19867259\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p>The study is supported by Macao Science and Technology\nDevelopment Fund (File Number: 0013\/2018\/A1) and UM\u2019s research fund (File\nNumber: MYRG2017-00200-ICMS). Tao Jinsong, a PhD student in the ICMS, is the\nfirst author of the study, and Zheng Ying is the corresponding author.
