The inauguration ceremony for the new campus was held on 5\nNovember 2013. Wang Yang, vice premier of the State Council, officiated at the\nplaque-unveiling ceremony, in the company of Chui Sai On, chief executive of\nMacao SAR and chancellor of UM. More than 500 guests witnessed the landmark\nmoment in the university\u2019s history. The entire ceremony, which lasted only an\nhour, was a smooth and solemn occasion, but the 480 hours before the event had\nbeen hectic. This issue of My UM<\/i>\ntells you how over 300 UM colleagues worked literally day and night to pull off\nthis big event within just 20 days.<\/p>\n\n

For Katrina Cheong, director of the Communications Office,\nthe preparation process could be summed up in four words, \u201climited time\u201d and\n\u201ccomplicated coordination\u201d. Katrina and her colleagues had always known there\nwas going to be an inauguration ceremony, but for various reasons they had only\n20 days to actually prepare for the event. The invitations were sent 10 days\nbefore the event because that was when the list of guests was finalised.\nKatrina\u2019s office has organised a lot of big events over the years, but what\nmade the new campus inauguration ceremony different from all the previous\nevents was the need to liaise with the various government departments on a 24\/7\nbasis and the necessity of making meticulous security plans to ensure the\nsafety of those invited government officials and other guests. To make sure the\nguests could receive the entry permit in time, UM colleagues needed to collect the\nguests\u2019 personal information, make the entry permits, and send back the permits\nfor confirmation within one week. During that week, the Communications Office\nhandled nearly 1,000 entry permits for invited guests and their vehicles, in\naddition to answering hundreds of telephone enquiries on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n

A lot of things had to be accomplished within 20 days\u2014making\na detailed event plan, finalising the guest list, obtaining entry permits and\ncompleting other relevant formalities for over 500 guests, setting up the\nvenue, selecting musical numbers for the ceremony, and conducting rehearsals. Colleagues\nfrom the various departments and student performers were very supportive and showed\na lot of initiative, taking care of the different aspects of the preparation.\nThanks to their hard work, the inauguration ceremony was a great success, and a\nseries of academic events were organised around the inauguration day (see the\ntable below for details).<\/p>\n\n

The Inauguration Ceremony as I Remember It<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Your Recognition, My Motivation<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Esther\nChan works in the Communications Office. Her responsibilities related to the new\ncampus inauguration ceremony included setting up the stage, receiving guests,\nas well as arranging refreshments and campus tours. These tasks may sound\nsimple, mundane even, but carrying them out was a lot more difficult and\ntime-consuming. Take stage setup for instance. The repeated site checks and\nnegotiation over the details were not the worst part, the real challenge lay in\nthe complicated procedures for obtaining entry and exit permits for the various\nparties concerned, especially given the impossibly tight work schedules.<\/p>\n\n

What\nEsther remembers most from the ceremony were the praises from the guests. \u201cI\ntook the guests on a tour of the campus after the ceremony, and they were all\nso impressed,\u201d Esther says. \u201cThey kept saying how amazing it was for the university\nto build such a large, beautiful campus within just a little over three years.\nAnd hearing what they said, I couldn\u2019t help but feel really proud that I had the\nopportunity to be a part of this project. I think it\u2019s no exaggeration to say\nthat the new campus has ushered in a new era for higher education in Macao.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Danger\u2019s in the Detail<\/b><\/p>\n\n

There is no doubt the new\ncampus has ushered in a new era for higher education in Macao, and for Dick\nLai, head of the Security and Transport Section of the Campus Management\nOffice, who was mainly responsible for security and transport, it also provided\na whole new experience. Although the new campus was not fully open to the\nguests attending the ceremony, managing those open areas still presented a\nsteep learning curve for Dick and his colleagues. What made this learning curve\nsteeper was the fact that they had to pay close attention to every little\ndetail in order to identify safety hazards. Once, during an inspection of the event\nvenue by the Macao Fire Services Bureau, Dick and his colleagues noticed that\nsome construction paraphernalia was stacked on the not-yet-finished ceiling\nabove the stage, and they immediately removed it. \u201cFrom my experience, those\ndetails that seem to have absolutely nothing to do with security are often the hidden\nsafety hazards,\u201d says Dick.<\/p>\n\n

Striking the Right Note<\/b><\/p>\n\n

For Yuki Ieong, first-year\nstudent from the Faculty of Education who played saxophone along with other\nmembers of UM\u2019s Symphonic Band at the ceremony, the importance of detail is\ncertainly something she can relate to. For her, the most memorable part of the\nevent was the welcome number accompanying the procession\u2019s entry into the University\nHall. \u201cYou needed to follow the conductor, but you also needed to consider the\npace of the procession,\u201d says Yuki. \u201cThe music must stop precisely at the\nmoment the last one in the procession entered the venue. Unless you are\nsuperbly practiced and familiar with what you are doing, you can\u2019t achieve that\nkind of precision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Striking the right note is important,\nwhether you are playing an instrument, or presenting campus information to a\ngroup of guests. Rita Huo, a secondyear master\u2019s student from the Department of\nChinese, is a quiet, shy girl often mistaken for an undergraduate because of\nher petite build. In preparation for the inauguration ceremony, she memorised\n75 pages of campus information in Chinese and English. \u201cIt really wasn\u2019t easy,\u201d\nsays Rita with a shy smile, flush rising in her cheeks, \u201cbut it was a great opportunity\nto learn to overcome my shyness.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
