UM holds Town Hall Meetings on a regular basis\u2014sometimes\nonce a month, sometimes once every other month\u2014in an attempt to improve\ninternal communication. In November alone, UM held four Town Hall Meetings, one\nof which taking place on the new campus. Many students, faculty members and\nadministrative staff attended the meetings to keep abreast of the new\ndevelopments of the university.<\/p>\n\n
At those Town Hall Meetings, the top management shared new developments\nand arrangements concerning the new campus as well as the numerous strategies\nfor improving the university in various areas, including communication with the\ngovernment and community, mode of education, faculty management, as well as\nresearch and postgraduate curriculum. Questions from faculty members and\nstudents revolved around new campus accommodation and transport as well as\nother issues of direct relevance to their work and study.<\/p>\n\n
Prof. Cheng Chun Wai, associate dean of the Faculty of Education,\nnoted that some issues can\u2019t be solved overnight, and the key is to help the\nrelevant stakeholders to better understand the situation, adding that it was a\nvery good idea to have the rector and vice rectors explaining in detail the university\u2019s\nnew developments in various areas and answering questions from faculty members\nand students during the Q&A session. He suggested passing notes to the\nspeakers as an alternative way of asking questions during the Q&A session.<\/p>\n\n
University Strategies<\/b><\/p>\n\n
Ties with the\nGovernment and the Community<\/b><\/p>\n\n
The new campus helps to improve the university\u2019s \u201chard\nstrength\u201d, which calls for the improvement of its \u201csoft strength\u201d. And to\nachieve this end, the university is going to make major revisions to the UM Charter<\/i>. Concrete measures will\ninclude actively involving alumni and the Alumni Association in university\naffairs, as well as establishing a community service centre, a higher education\ninformation centre, and a biomedical instrument centre, to strengthen ties with\nthe community. <\/p>\n\n
Student Development\nand Mode of Education<\/b><\/p>\n\n
The university is also going to implement the \u201c4-in-1\u201d mode\nof education on a full scale, which will entail improving general education,\nimplementing research and internship education, building residential colleges\nwith distinctive character and constantly improving their mode of operation, as\nwell as increasing student intake and expand the scope of exchange programmes\nafter complete relocation to the new campus. <\/p>\n\n
Faculty Management <\/b><\/p>\n\n
With a new faculty\u2014the Faculty of Health Sciences\u2014and other\nfaculties to be established in the near future, the university will have more\nacademic programmes, more students, and more faculty members. To develop a\nstrong faculty team, the university is going to review the performance\nappraisal system and improve the remuneration system. <\/p>\n\n
Scientific Research\nand Postgraduate Curriculum<\/b><\/p>\n\n
On the research front, the university is going to identify\nkey research areas, establish a centre for key research projects, promote\nmultidisciplinary research, increase investment in research, and provide\nguidance and support for students wishing to start their own business. In\naddition, UM is reforming the postgraduate curriculum to make it more convenient\nfor working people to pursue further education.<\/p>\n\n
